Your view from each of the two bedrooms at the Hermitage apartment at night. In the spring, summer and fall, the Eiffel Tower glistens through the green leaves of the trees outside as you see. In the winter, when the leaves have fallen, you see La Grande Dame in all her glory. Look up for a direct view all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Don't worry, you can close the shutters at night to keep the light out - but most guests and their children love to fall asleep with the shutters open, to the unforgettable view of La Grande Dame de Paris.

You are immediately drawn into the dining room of our vacation apartment in Paris, both for its elegance and the sunny views it offers. Step out onto the balcony through a double set of French doors to a breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower, La Grande Dame de Paris. You can even see the Jules Verne restaurant from here! Sit at the marble bistro table and watch the sun set behind the Eiffel Tower with a glass of champagne, so romantic! On sunny mornings, enjoy café au lait and your special location on the Champs de Mars Gardens.

Back inside the apartment, a beautiful country-style table for eight provides a most romantic setting. The table sits below a metal chandelier and atop a luxurious rug over a herringbone parquet floor. On the left side of the apartment dining room is an antique white marble fireplace below a large framed mirror, and the ancestral portrait graces the right wall above an antique side table that sits between two antique armchairs upholstered in red. The apartment dining room features immaculate wainscoting, crown molding, and doorframes, all in a lustrous white.

A Noble in the Court of Louis XV
Our friends who own the Hermitage Paris apartment trace their history back generations; in fact, the portrait in the apartment dining room is of an ancestor who was in the court of Louis XV. The building was constructed in 1840 on the Fields of Mars (Champs de Mars), which gained fame when the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889. The current owner's great grandfather was born in this Paris apartment and, of course, was there during the Great Exhibition when the Grande Dame was built. Her grandfather was a child at the time and remembered this historic time vividly.

In the second apartment bedroom there is a small statue of Lafayette because the family is a descendant of this great General and ally of the United States during the Revolutionary War.

The master bedroom of our Paris apartment rental, next to the dining room, is a large room that also has a French window with fantastic views.

The traditional toile bedspread, white porcelain lamps and linens are charming. Above all, is the view over the Champs de Mars gardens -- west-facing with plenty of sunlight in the afternoons. In the summer, you feel as if you are in the country, because the bedroom windows are framed by green trees.

At night, you can see the Eiffel Tower, lit up through the leaves of the trees outside. Don't worry about your sleep, because wooden shutters can be closed in every room to make the rooms completely dark.

While you are on a busy street in the middle of a bustling city, this Paris apartment is quiet! All the apartment windows have wooden shutters to close off the light as needed.

The large apartment bathroom, further down the hall on the left, has been completely remodeled in a most dramatic fashion. The large white porcelain sink is built into an extravagant counter supported by two bold columns with the large mirror artistically integrated into the design. Enjoy the light streaming in through the window as you relax in your full-size jacuzzi tub. The window overlooks the inner courtyard and the venetian blinds close for privacy.

The full-size Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom features both fixed and flexible hose shower options, and only the best and plushest towels await you on the heated towel rack.

Guests won't be able to help anxiously awaiting their turn to use this pleasing spa, and they shouldn't have any trouble getting the kids into the tub.

Next to the bathroom (not photographed) is a large walk-in closet with hanging, shelves, drawers and lots of room to store suitcases.

Tulips at the Base of the Eiffel Tower
These tulips bloomed shortly before we took our first pictures of the apartment. We found the colors and view towards the Tower to be irresistible on this beautiful morning in early spring. Look at the beautiful scrollwork of the Eiffel Tower behind.

Stroll to the romantic river at the end of the gardens and watch the boats and lights along the Seine. There is a Bateau Bus or Boat bus stop just below, which sails you to Notre Dame and back, stopping at famous landmarks such as the Invalides, the Louvres and Musee d'Orsay. You can literally get to most landmarks of Paris on the river.

Playgrounds in the Lovely Champ de Mars Gardens
There are four playgrounds in the lovely Champ de Mars gardens below, including the one where we brought our children when they were young. They loved the hand cranked carousel as much as any ride at Disney Europe! Each child is given a stick and must try to catch a brass ring. The carousel has been here for generations and still turns by hand.

Families Flock to Champs de Mars Gardens
Families in the neighborhood flock to the Champs de Mars gardens on the weekend when the sun is out. It is one of the few large green spaces in Paris and is one of the reasons that the 7th arrondissement is one of the most sought after arrondissements of Paris.

Musée Branly is Two Blocks Away
The Musee Branly, on the banks of the Seine river, is two blocks from our Hermitage vacation apartment in Paris. It houses one of the largest collections of ethnic art from around the world, carefully collected for many centuries. The new styles of display, which truly put the objects 'en valeur' are being imitated in other museums throughout the world. This museum is definitely worth a visit for its collections and for the constantly changing exhibitions. Enjoy the café in the museum gardens or restaurant, both excellent places to relax and soak up the feeling of being in Paris.

At the rue de Grenelle Open Market, there is a 'commerçante' from Normandy who sells dozens of different kinds of apples, including her own cider and preserves. She will carefully help clients choose the brand and flavor of apple that matches their taste - only in France!

Three Excellent Cheese Shops Near Hermitage Apartment
There are three excellent cheese shops near to the Hermitage Paris Apartment and the choice is overwhelming. My favorite cheese is Chèvre or goat's cheese.

This photos shows aged 'crotins' and I love to serve them slightly broiled and melted on a slice of apple with green salad. I scrape off the rind, but my in-laws generally eat their cheeses with the rind still on.

Falling in love with Paris has as much to do with discovering foods and living like a Parisian, as it does with visiting museums and churches. We tell our guests to spend part of each day shopping for their lunch or dinner, to let children choose the morning pastry, day's dessert or more. That is why we love our neighborhood, the 7th, because there are more food shops and Open Markets than any neighborhood of Paris. It has retained a village-like feel; as a result you will delight in the enjoyment of living here!

Unique Shops Surround the Apartment and Neighborhood
This is one of the most village-like arrondissements of Paris, where families have lived for generations. It means that you will find lots of food stores, pastry shops, bakers and markets. Parisians are very demanding when it comes to food, so their shops and local markets must have the best quality in order to meet their standards. And of course, the neighborhood would not be complete without all of the bistros, cafés and restaurants which they stop at, for their morning café, lunch or dinner with family and friends.
