Here in the living room of our Touraine Paris rental, floor-to-ceiling silk drapes frame the two sets of French doors leading out onto the balcony. The beautifully refinished hardwood floors reflect the natural light around the room and highlight the rich colors of the furniture. Two antique-style padded armchairs feature multi-hued cushions that match the comfortable sofa and oversized ottoman. The centerpiece of the room is the original marble fireplace (decorative only) topped with a large framed mirror. Completing the room's elegant look is the finely detailed crowned molding around the ceiling with a complementing circular wooden frieze set into the ceiling's center. The double doors you see on the right lead into bedroom two, which can also be accessed from the entrance hallway. Opposite those doors is another set of doors opening onto the study.

All of the curtains are lined, and the windows and French doors feature double-paned glass, so comfortable sleeping conditions are ensured.

For your entertainment, the study features a flat-screen television and a dual-standard DVD player so you can rent movies nearby or bring your favorite ones from home. Stroll Along the Seine to Ile St Louis, Marais & Notre Dame

Medieval Ile St Louis is very popular with artists, doctors, actresses, and heiresses, and it is full of chic stores, boutiques, cafés, and restaurants, all of them enticing you with their extravagant window displays. Exuding a village-like ambiance and brimming with historical importance, this quaint little island, is an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet three metro lines can easily be reached by crossing the appropriate bridge to the Left or Right Banks. In fact, the Sully Moorland metro is only a half a block from our Touraine Paris rental. This island community of about 6,000 is not only known for its fashionable shops and terrific restaurants, but also for its 16th- and 17th-century mansions with their beautiful stone-paved courtyards. Look about and you'll find that virtually every other house boasts a plaque declaring that some artist or statesmen once lived there.

Ile St Louis also provides quick and easy access, via Pont St Louis, to beautiful and busy Ile de la Cité, where you'll find Notre-Dame, the Palace of Justice, and Sainte-Chapelle. The Sainte-Chapelle is famous for its 15 magnificent stained-glass windows. Ile de la Cité is where Paris found its beginnings, and you can view the 2,000-year-old remains of the original Roman settlement in a crypt that lies under the square fronting Notre-Dame.

Palais de Justice
You can simply cross the bridge right outside our Touraine Paris vacation rental to reach medieval Ile St Louis, and right next to that is popular Ile de la Cité where you'll find the Palace of Justice, where two stone lions grace its elegant staircase. Close by is the Conciergerie, the grisly antechamber to the guillotine where Henri IV's assassin, the religious fanatic Ravaillac, was imprisoned prior to his execution. During the Revolution this superb four-aisled Gothic Hall of the Men-at-Arms housed more than 4,000 prisoners, including Marie-Antoinette and even the Revolutionary judges Danton and Robespierre.

Take a Boat Trip Along the Seine
It's always a joy to walk across the many bridges along the Seine, but you can also hop on and off boats just across the river on the Left Bank. The famous boat tours are especially worthwhile. They're a great way to tour the Seine to get your bearings at the beginning of your Paris vacation. You'll quickly see how close our Touraine apartment is to world-famous sights, from the Musée d'Orsay and the Louvre to the Palais Royal, the gilded statue of Joan of Arc, and the popular formal gardens of the Tuileries.

Beyond the Concierge, stroll to Sainte-Chapelle, the ethereal and magical chapel hailed as one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the Western world. Marvel at its 15 magnificent stained-glass windows separated by the narrowest of columns that soar 50 feet up to the star-studded, vaulted roof. For a peek into Paris' past, visit the Crypte Archéologique, which lies under the square fronting Notre-Dame, and see the 2,000-year-old remains of the original Roman settlement.

M. Lefranc is the local Fromager. He has found specialist producers throughout France and you'll be tempted to try all of his cheeses. If you've decided to have a meal of salad, fresh baguette and cheese, be sure to tell him when you want to eat it -- 'pour au jour'd hui or 'demain', today or tomorrow - so he can choose the one that will be perfect on the day. These small details are very important in France and it is one of the small wonders of staying in a vacation rental and living like a Parisian.

Local Butcher
The local butcher, M. Gardil, always seems to have a queue of customers for their fresh meats. Try some thin slices of delicious bayonne ham with a salad and cheese for dinner; he sells some of the best. He also roasts delicious chickens that are ready to eat and excellent value. This is one of thee beauties of renting a vacation apartment and staying in a great neighborhood: you experience the best of life as a Parisian and you save a lot by not having to eat at restaurants for every meal.

Buy Warm Croissants and Fresh Bread from the Local Bakery
What would a neighborhood be without a local bakery? It wouldn't be Paris! Your local bakery has been selling fresh bread for over 31 years and when you bite into their fresh warm baguettes - crusty on the outside and just the right amount of soft bread inside - you'll know it is so popular. If you're the first one up in the morning, it's open early so you can buy warm buttery croissants for the family breakfast before heading out for the day. But while it's quiet, take the time to enjoy one with a café au lait on the balcony, luxuriating in the sunshine and the sites of Paris below.

Cross the bridge below to the Ile St. Louis and buy the freshest fruits and vegetables. You'll also find fresh squeezed orange juice and delicious juices and confitures to have with baguettes and butter.

Patisserie
Notice that the nearby pastry shop is not the same as the bakery! Each is a separate skill, although some artisans are skilled at both. This subtle difference is a discovery you'll make when you rent an apartment for your vacation in Paris, because part of the experience is to discover your local food shops. We think that living like a Parisian is one of the joys of coming to Paris and we only choose the best neighborhoods where the local artisans still flourish. Some neighborhoods in Paris, particularly the modern ones which are further away from the river, have allowed high rises to be built and unfortunately they start to look like any crowded city. That is where local shops are often replaced by 'grandes surfaces', or supermarkets, something most Parisians abhore.

We confess that we always head to the local pâtisserie first, to buy a treat for dessert. Children love to be assigned the 'dessert mission' choosing a selection of desserts for everyone to sample - more fun than visiting churches all day! It's one of the reasons that staying in a vacation apartment is so compelling, because you balance site seeing with the art of living as a Parisian.

Good Parisian neighborhoods such as this one in the 4th arrondissement or our other favorite neighborhood, the 7th arrondissement on the Left Bank are thriving villages where Parisians have lived there for generations. For Parisians, good food is a way of life and lively neighborhoods means there is great food competition, so you can choose from numerous bakers, cheese shops and pastry stores!

One thing you may have noticed about our apartments at Paris Perfect is that we carefully select apartments located in the neighborhoods that we call the 'inner circles of Paris', which are alive with the ancient village-like atmosphere of small local merchants. Several days a week you'll shop at the local open market where the locals go to buy the freshest flowers and foods brought in from the French countryside. These markets have been in existence in Paris since the 1400's and we always choose neighborhoods where there is a local one nearby.
