Romantic and Fabulous New Apartment: the Calvados Luxury Rental!

12-old-photographs-of-paris

We helped owners remodel and complete the beautiful Calvados apartment rental in Paris and we are as delighted as they are! Like the after dinner liqueur from Normandy, this apartment is meant to be savored. With a beautiful balcony and straight on view of the Eiffel Tower, it’s one of the most romantic apartments we’ve seen.

The apartment was owned by a widower for decades. When he passed away, his heirs put it up for sale. We worked with the buyers to re-design the apartment, adding a second bathroom and re-configuring the kitchen and bedroom. Thought you’d enjoy photos, before and after.

Before: Hallway of the Calvados when purchased.

The corridor reflected the 70′s; better lighting and removing the bookshelves opened up this long hallway. The WC or toilet was the first doorway on the right and the kitchen opened directly into the hallway next.

After: Hallway of the Calvados Apartment after remodel

We re-configured the bedroom to create the main bathroom with hallway entrance. This makes it convenient for a group of four. On the right, we created a short corridor and moved the opening to the wc, with kitchen just beyond

This sunny room seats four people comfortably, with flat screen TV and decorative fireplace as a focal point.

After: Living Room with Dining Table

The long living room – we used the layout and rug to subtly divide it into a living area and a dining area, not shown on the right.

The living room looked dull, with beige carpet and no special features.

After: The Dining Area After: Spacious and Light

We removed the old carpet to reveal beautiful oak parquet floors. Added a chandelier above the oak dining table and the rest was easy.

Before: During works….Tubes and more tubes!

We carefully plan the plumbing and wiring before work begins because it’s complicated! All wiring must be run through tubes – see the blue plastic ones in this picture — to isolate the wire and prevent shorts or fires.

After: Kitchen Remodel

Remodeling the kitchen was easy, with café’ au lait colored cabinets and granite countertops

After: Kitchen completely refitted

We added new cupboards, painted it in cream and installed pale granite countertops. Some charming French pictures and clock add a touch of Paris.

After: Master bedroom has a soft and romantic look

Redecorating the bedroom was easy because the large windows let the sunlight come streaming in. Pretty floral curtains were lined in pale green check. Antique-style headboard and good light…the result is elegant comfort.

We lined the left hand wall of the bedroom with cupboards, moved the bathroom door to the main corridor.

Elegant shallow sink and pale marble countertop. We framed the mirror with alternating colors of beige tile.

After: Bathroom Two was created from the kitchen and bedroom.

To use a French expression, we “grignote’d” or ate away from the kitchen and the original bedroom cupboards to create a second bathroom complete with shower and sink.

Before: WC

A common solution in Paris apartments is to suspend the hot water heater above the toilet. I’ve never heard of one falling down, but they always make me uncomfortable. Also they are small due to size restrictions in small toilets. We bought the largest available and set it up right behind the kitchen wall.

After: We moved the doorway of the WC to the side and created a larger room.

Our Favorite Kitchen Shops for Chefs

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The stores listed below cater to French chefs, with everything a restaurant needs from monogrammed dishes, blank menu boards, wonderful porcelain terrines, to knives, pots and pans, even Styrofoam shaped as the Eiffel Tower, which you can take home as a kitsch souvenir or use for cocktail parties, covered with cheeses and cold meats, tomatoes, and so on. (Yes, that’s what I use mine for.)

To get to both, go to Les Halles by Métro. Look for the beautiful old cathedral, St. Eustache. Walk down rue Montmartre, which runs along the right side of the cathedral, and you’ll enjoy seeing many of the fresh foods the chefs buy, especially foie gras and pâté de foie gras. There are interesting cooking supply stores on the way, plus a lovely old café on the left – with beautiful wood and tiles inside.

For Dehillerin, you’d pass down the left side of St. Eustache. There are several other chef’s stores in the area and it’s fun to wander around.

Our Top 5 Restaurants in the 7th Arrondissement

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

The 7th arrondissement is famous for its outstanding restaurants.  We’ve spent many years eating in the area and are pleased to share our top 5 restaurants picks.

  1. Le Violon d’Ingres
    135 rue St. Dominique, 01 45 55 15 05, www.leviolondingres.com

This is owned by the former-chef of the Crillon and Ritz, Christian Constant. Constant is one of the most famous chefs in France, renowned for his cooking but also training a whole generation of emerging chefs. Highly recommended by Patricia Wells in the New York Times for its excellent menu. Christian Constant was one of the first chefs to create an excellent menu, creating a comfortable and elegant ambiance. Find a combination of 3 course luncheons, an affordable option at this one star restaurant … to superb seasonal dishes. We tried their truffle menu last fall and it was fabulous: the entire menu included truffles, even down to the truffle and thyme ice cream. (This is my husband’s favorite restaurant in the neighborhood.)

  2. Café Constant
139 rue St. Dominique, 01 47 53 73 34Every Parisian has their local favorite, where they know they’ll eat an excellent meal at a reasonable price … and this is mine. Christian Constant’s wonderful, casual restaurant features excellent food at reasonable prices and an ever-changing seasonal menu. A lovely place to have lunch or dinner, and enjoy some of his wonderful dishes at a lesser cost than his Michelin starred Violon d’Ingres a few doors away.

  3. Au Petit Sud Ouest
46 ave. de la Bourdonnais, 01 45 55 59 59Excellent foie gras, magret de canard (marinated duck breast), and confit de canard (preserved leg of duck) at very reasonable prices. We are encouraging all our guests to try this restaurant as the owner and his wife (who speaks beautiful English) are charming and make your dining experience an absolute joy.

  4. Les Fables de la Fontaine
131 rue St. Dominique, 01 44 18 37 55Christian Constant’s (of Violon d’Ingres) established this excellent seafood-only brasserie in a lovely location on the square with the fountain. He sold it to his former chef and mâitre d’, but still oversees much of its goings on. Small but charming, and the seafood is excellent. The fabulous mousses and other combinations won them a Michelin star. We absolutely love it! Open on Sundays – make your reservations early as it is always full!
  5. Thoumieux Restaurant
79 rue St. Dominique, 01 47 05 49 75Newly reopened to great reviews in partnership with the famous Costes brothers; reservations a must. The chef, Jean-Francois Piege, is formerly of the Michelin-stared Crillon restaurant, and one of the judges on Top Chef in France; excellent dining.  Open on Sundays.

We’re always keen to try new places so if you have a favorite restaurant in Paris we’d love to hear about it!
