Best Place to Shop in Paris -- la rue de Commerce

Sharing One of our Paris Secrets — The Best Shopping Street in Paris!

Would you believe me if I told you that one of Paris’ best shopping streets is hidden just around the corner from the Eiffel Tower, surely the city’s most-visited monument? Follow along with me, and I’ll share with you this little shopping secret in Paris’ 15th arrondissement, just across the beautiful Champ de Mars gardens from our favorite neighborhood in the 7th arrondissement. It’s called rue du Commerce, a very appropriate name for a wonderful shopping street!

Rue du Commerce - a few minutes from the Eiffel Tower

There are over one hundred boutiques packed into this lovely tree-lined street. A shopping delight!

Over 100 boutiques packed into pretty tree-lined Paris avenue

The first time I walked along the rue du Commerce, I realized I had stumbled across one of the best hidden shopping streets in Paris. Not only for the selection, which covers everything from one-of-a-kind boutiques to affordable fashions, but because I was shopping where the locals go. As I stepped out in the street to take a few photos, I relished the fact that I was the only person in sight with a camera. If you’re visiting Paris, it’s a short walk from many of our vacation rentals in the 7th arrondissement.

The charming rue du Commerce is packed with boutiques on a quiet one-way street

Start at the top where Ave de la Motte Piquet meets rue du Commerce and plan on spending a leisurely morning or afternoon.  It’s only five minutes walk our newest Paris short term rentals, which we’re excited to share with you.  The Renoir and Monet Paris rentals boast show-stopping Eiffel Tower views and a perfect central location — close to Commerce, close to the renowned Grenelle open air market and near all the excellent restaurantse in the 7th.

Enjoy the shopping and also the neighborhood around the Champs de Mars Gardens for it’s a true Parisian village.  Stop for a café,  picnic in the park, have lunch and experience life as a Parisian. You’ll find every kind of fashion, from back-to-school wear to high French fashion!

Pretty flats with bows

Our college-age son needed some basics before going back to Boston last Fall.  He found the boat shoes he was looking for, nice polo shirts for a bargain price, cotton slacks in pale green and blue …. even underwear.  Everything is just that little bit different from clothes in the U.S. where he goes to college – the  latest colors, more tailored shirts and slacks.

There’s something for every age and taste – Frech fashion even for  middle-aged moms like me …

Brightly colored fashions on rue du Commerce

What we find so refreshing about rue du Commerce are the dozens of excellent fashion boutiques.  These stores sell the latest trends in fashion without the big expensive labels.  You don’t find them in the expensive couture streets in Paris.  Just ike Reciproque, the best designer consignment store in the nearby 16th, this is where in-the-know Parisians shop.

FL – New Paris Restaurant Attracting Excellent Reviews

Tender beef with fresh seasonal vegetables

There’s a new restaurant in Paris that has been drawing excellent reviews from French food critics. FL (how the French pronounce Eiffel) is run by rising chef Nicolas Valanchon.  It’s located on the Left Bank’s 7th arrondissement on a small side street near the Champs de Mars and Eiffel Tower. Tasty and reasonably-priced FL is at 1 rue Augereau, just 2 minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower. . This small and inviting restaurant specializes in Valanchon’s home region of Picardie, home to excellent dishes that aren’t well known among the Paris foodies.

Original and tasty starter, a trio of fresh tomatoes

Valanchon has an enviable cooking resume!  He grew up in Amiens, Normandy and worked as a sous-chef at the famous Westminster Hotel in Le Touquet, a luxury hotel and restaurant in this resort town of Normandy.  He was a sous chef at the 3-star George V and then at Drouant. Nicolas moved to Australia for two years where he worked under the Tony Bilsan, the godfather of Australian cuisine.

Risotta with fresh spring vegetables -- fabulous!

Each menu is designed around the seasons of the year, selecting only the freshest ingredients. His specialty is dishes from Picardie, a lesser known region of France bordering Normandy. They include variations of the famous Ficelle Picard, crepes with ham and duxelle mushrooms. Valanchon’s delicate version uses a Mille Fille pastry, delicate sauce and is delicious.  Other dishes are home made foie gras with poached beet roots, roasted chicken breasts with white asparagus and sautéed red onions, fish of the day with white Asparagus, sweet Onions, Lemon and Limoncello butter.  For dessert we enjoyed an almond macaron on a chocolate base and a chocolate fondant with marinated orange strips.

Menu is created around the freshest ingredients of the season

The prices are reasonable.  Starters range from € 9 to € 12 and main courses from € 17 to € 19.

Original menu ideas, filling and delicious

We had an excellent meal and will be back soon.  It’s starting to attract a loyal following of discerning Parisians;  we recommend you try it before it becomes impossible to get a table.

The French Will Never Forget: A Commemoration of 9/11 in Paris

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

The Sign on the Towers Reads in French and English: The French Will Never Forget

Paris will never forget the thousands who died on September 11, 2011 .  A solemn event commemorated this terrible day organized by  ‘The French Will Never Forget’,  Association.  It took place at the Trocadero, across the river from the Eiffel Tower.

The Towers of the World Trade Center were symbolically erected at the Palais Chaillot,.  The American and French flags flew on the spires of the Palais, the largest flags ever made in France, measuring 59 feet x 30 feet.  The two white towers framed the Eiffel Tower in the background, symbolizing the union of these two nations.

I walked to the Trocadero with a friend and we stood in solemn silence as the moment of the first impact was marked.  Ambassador Charles Rifkin, the American Ambassador to France attended as did the French Ambassador to Washington.

The American and French flags flying over Paris

The ceremony opened with French children carrying the large flags that were raised over the memorial while choirs from the Académie de Musique and Young American Presidential Scholars of The Arts sang the French National Anthem and the American National Anthems. It brought tears to my eyes.

With many others, we stood in silence at the moment of the impact of the first airplane. And waited for the moment of the second impact while the choir sang.  It was a gray day in Paris and the skies opened up with rain at 8:46, one minute after the first plane hit the World Trade Center., an eerie reflection of this sad and somber moment.

To  the  2.976 victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center and to their families and friends — we will never forget you.
