Coutume Café – A Perfect Spot for Coffee Lovers in the 7th Arrondissement

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

I’m always on the lookout for new restaurants, cafés and shops that add to the charm and character of the 7th arrondissement – my favorite neighborhood in Paris. When Adam over at the irresistible blog Paris Pâtisseries wrote about Coutume Café, located between Le Bon Marché and Les Invalides along the rue de Babylone, I knew I had a new spot to check out.

Coutume Café has been getting wonderful press and reviews for their excellent blends roasted on site and coffee made with some unusual brewing techniques. The morning I stopped by for the first time there was a TV camera crew setting up to film a feature for Télématin France 2. Although there were preparations for filming in the air, owner Antoine Netien very kindly took time to explain in English the different types of coffee they prepare at Coutume.

Amazing coffee in Paris

The counter at Coutume with intriguing coffee machines

This is where science and coffee meet to create some truly divine drinks. I had to ask about the tall apparatus where coffee water was very slowly dripping down from a large glass bulb through coffee grounds into a glass container at the bottom. Known as cold extraction, this process takes most of the day to complete. The rich brew is served over ice, which I must try on my next visit. First, I had to try Coutume’s coffee brewed in a siphon pot, a process that eluded my coffee comprehension – even in English!

Although I’m not a coffee drinker, Antoine suggested I try the siphon coffee because of the delicate and warm flavors made by using this vacuum pot technique. And one listens to the Meilleur Torréfacteur de France 2011the best coffee roaster in France – when he gives you advice! When the pot started glowing red during the brewing process, I grabbed my camera and ran over to take another photo. The coffee is served in the glass pot where it is brewed along with a special holder to pour it with so you don’t touch the hot glass. There were two lovely cups that this non-coffee drinker thoroughly enjoyed!

Italian espresso in Paris

Coffee and Italian style espresso at Coutume

One of the first things that caught my eye behind the counter at Coutume was their gorgeous silver espresso machine. One of the finest in the world, the La Marzocco Strada espresso machine is handmade in Florence, Italy. In addition to the unique siphon coffee, we had to order an espresso just to try it out. My Italian husband was impressed by the flavor, although he noted that the espresso cup should have been hot. This is a traditional touch in the Naples area, which is known for the best espresso in Italy. We were both pleased to have finally found a true Italian espresso in Paris!

Coutume also has a lovely selection of teas  and hot chocolate (if you’re not a coffee lover) and a light menu perfect for breakfast, brunch or a light lunch. A highly recommended spot the next time you’re strolling through the 7th arrondissement in Paris!

The Roland Garros 2012 French Open has gotten off to an exciting start this year, and as usual this annual Grand Slam tournament is drawing attention from tennis fans around the world. One of the most famous tennis tournaments in the world, sitting in the stadium and watching some of the world’s top players on court is a once in a lifetime experience. If you weren’t able to get tickets for this year’s Roland Garros, there are still fun ways to enjoy the atmosphere of the French Open.

Again this year visitors to Paris can enjoy Roland Garros in the City, a special event that brings the excitement and fun of the French Open right into the center of Paris. The large Place de l’Hôtel de Ville in front of Paris’ beautiful City Hall (where the ice skating rink is set up in the winter) is transformed into an area dedicated to tennis where visitors can enjoy tennis related games, activities, watch matches live on the huge screen and even get a feel of the French Open’s iconic clay court in a specially installed court. The events are all free to enjoy and are sponsored by the French Tennis Federation. Roland Garros in the City runs from Saturday, May 26th through Sunday, June 10th. If you’re traveling in Paris, head to the Hôtel de Ville in the 4th arrondissement to experience the excitement of the French Open in the heart of Paris!

Recipe for Cherry & Ricotta Tart

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

The owner of The Gloucester apartment in London, a fabulous 4 bedroom rental in the heart of Kensington, has kindly shared her delicious recipe for Crostata di ciliege e ricotta (Cherry and ricotta tart).  If you don’t have time to make the pastry, you can cheat by using ready-made puff pastry from the store.

PASTRY

  • 400g flour (about 3 ¼ cups)
  • 200g butter room temperature (1 ¾ stick of butter)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

FILLING

  • 400g ricotta (about 1 2/3 cups)
  • 300g cherries (about 10 ½ ounces)
  • 150g sugar (about ¾ cup)
  • 1 egg

STEPS

  1. Grated zest of ½ a lemon
  2. Pinch of cinnamon
  3. Make pastry cover with cling film and leave to rest for half an hour in the fridge.
  4. Remove stones from the cherries and put them in a saucepan with 100g of sugar and a pinch of cinnamon. Cook gently for 10 minutes then leave to cool.
  5. Beat together the ricotta, egg and lemon zest with the remaining sugar until a smooth creamy texture is obtained.
  6. Roll out ¾ of the pastry and line a buttered 23cm tart tin with it. Add the cherry mixture and then the ricotta mixture, level it out. Make strips from the remaining pastry and decorate the top with a criss cross of pastry strips.
  7. Bake in an oven set at 180C for 40/45 minutes.
  8. Leave to cool then put in fridge.

Don’t forget to let us know what you thought of the recipe!  We’d also love to see any pics of your creation so we can add them to the blog.  Enjoy!
