Find super discounts on fashions, homeware & everything during the Paris summer sales!

For the best shopping options and deep discounts, the Grand Magasins are the first stop for many Parisians and travelers. These are the large department stores Printemps and Galeries Lafayette located on Boulevard Haussmann near the Opéra Garnier in the 9th arrondissement. The sales are HUGE at both stores! Here are a few Paris Perfect shopping tips for the Grand Magasins:

  • Before heading to Printemps, don’t forget to print your discount card for an extra 10% off of your shopping!
  • At Galeries Lafayette, go to the Welcome Desk at the front of the store with your passport (or photocopy) handy and ask for their 10% discount card, which is good in all departments.
  • If you’re looking for home décor, don’t miss the sales at the Galeries Lafayette home store just across the street.
  • Wear comfortable shoes … there’s a lot of ground to cover!
Best Hidden Shopping Street in Paris Rue du Commerce

Head to rue du Commerce near the Eiffel Tower - one of our favorite shopping streets in Paris!

If shopping on a more intimate scale is your style, you’ll want to visit the charming rue du Commerce, which we’ve named the Best Hidden Shopping Street in Paris. Located near the Eiffel Tower in the 15th arrondissement, this very Parisian shopping street is where locals head for deals during Les Soldes. It’s just a short stroll across the Champ de Mars from our vacation rentals in the 7th arrondissement, too!

The Perfect Paris Souvenir for a Child

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

An old work colleague of mine recently celebrated the birth of her first granddaughter in the US.  Since she’s a fluent French speaker, I was determined to find her the perfect “French” gift, but wanted to find something a little more classier than an Eiffel Tower bib!  So, I headed to Galeries Lafayette and, after getting distracted by the handbags and shoes, found myself on the children’s toy floor.   I spent hours looking at puzzles, dolls and rattles before finally wandering over to the book section.  And that’s where I found the perfect souvenir for a child – “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” in French!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

When my kids were little, no bookshelf was complete without a copy of this delightful children’s book, and I was thrilled to find a French version. Not only was it a perfect gift for a retired French teacher’s granddaughter but it was also inexpensive and easy to post to the US … if only I could have resisted the cute little baby Bonpoint dress and shoes (shhh, don’t tell Philippe!).

So, the next time you’re in Paris and looking for a gift for a little one back home, remember that there’s plenty of great alternatives to the standard Eiffel Tower memorabilia. Both Galeries Lafayette and Printemps have a huge selection of French books and toys, which can be easily carried in your suitcase or posted before you leave.

Cantine California – A Gourmet American Food Truck in Paris

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Cantine California, an American food truck, is taking the Paris street food scene by storm. How? With gourmet burgers, tacos, cupcakes and other American specialties it’s conquering the Parisians one by one. American and Canadian owner Jordan Feilders created Cantine California to bring together the high quality organic and fresh ingredients found in France with the American street food tradition and classic recipes. And the perfect home for his gourmet food truck? The lively outdoor markets in Paris naturally! You’ll find Cantine California at two markets in Paris, the Marché St.-Honoré and Marché Raspail.

Located in the heart of the 1st arrondissement, the Marché St.-Honoré is near the Louvre, Tuileries gardens and the elegant Place Vendôme. If you’re staying at the lovely, two bedroom Sylvaner vacation rental on Rue de la Paix, you’ll be just around the corner from the Marché St.-Honoré. This open-air market sets up in Place du Marché St.-Honoré every Wednesday and Saturday, so just stop by for a burger and cupcake after a visit to the Louvre or to take a break from shopping.

The Marché Raspail in the 6th arrondissement is one of our favorite Paris open-air markets. This market sets up along Boulevard Raspail from Rue du Cherche-Midi to Rue de Rennes every Tuesday and Friday (and Sunday as an organic market). It’s also a favorite with guests staying in our vacation rentals in the 6th arrondissement, such as the Corton, Nuits Saint Georges or the Chinon. Do your daily shopping alongside Parisians and you won’t miss Cantine California – just follow the delicious scents to their food truck for lunch!

Read more about Cantine California in their  recent feature in The New York Times, and do stop by to try their gourmet American fare and experience the Parisian open-air markets during your stay in Paris.

Marché St.-Honoré
