Top 10 Reasons to Visit Paris Now

Paris in the Winter Off Season

The beautiful Pont Alexandre III in the snow – how romantic!

We think Paris is extraordinary in any season, but there are special advantages to visiting in the low season. When is that, you ask? It’s typically from November to March, but varies depending on the venue. Mary Ann Grisham has created a fun list of our top ten reasons you should come to Paris NOW …

10. Avoid the Crowds

Hordes of tourists have come and gone, and you will not be jostled off the sidewalk. Museum lines are shorter, and café waiters are less harried. Yes, there will still be tourists, but there is much less risk of being flattened by a tour bus, or getting stuck behind cozy groups of 100, moving en masse from painting to painting while visiting the Louvre Museum.

See the Mona Lisa and other masterpieces at the Louvre with fewer crowds during the low season

9. Dine at the Top Restaurants in Paris

During the low season it’s easier to get reservations at your favorite Parisian restaurant. And if your French is limited, you might want to check out these online reservation booking sites: The Fork, and Eat in Paris.

8. Paris Winter Fashions

You get to wear your cute boots!! Isn’t this reason enough?

7. Stretch Your Frequent Flyer Miles!

Frequent Flier miles are more useful in low season for many airlines. For example, American Airlines off-peak travel awards from North America to Europe require only 40,000 miles instead of 60,000 in high season. Check with your carrier for similar off-season savings.

6. Holiday Markets & Christmas Windows in Paris

The holidays are a festive time to be in Paris, with Christmas Markets, ice skating rinks and beautiful holiday windows at the shops and department stores. Galeries Lafayette and Printemps always create show stopping window displays! Take a peek at this year’s enchanting Christmas windows in Paris. The Christmas Market on the Champs-Elysées is another favorite – and fun for the whole family!

5. Winter Sales!!!

Winter soldes, or sales, are a wonderful time for fashion lovers and bargain hunters to visit Paris. You’ll find deep discounts during the sale period, which will run from January 9th to February 12th in 2013. Visit our Shopping in Paris guide for tips on the best shopping streets, department stores and outlets to visit during the after Christmas sales in Paris!

4. Our Favorite Pumpkin Soup

The fabulous pumpkin soup (velouté de potiron) is a seasonal favorite at Café Constant … heavenly! We love it so much that we even got chef Christian Constant to share his recipe, which you can find on the Paris Perfect Blog here.

3. Warm Up at a Café

Take a break from sightseeing to warm up at a café while soaking up the charming Parisian atmosphere. The café scene is not just limited to warm weather months. Cafés are toasty warm inside, and many have portable heaters and even lap blankets so you can enjoy the outdoor setting, too!

2. Enjoy a Delicious Chocolat Chaud

Warming up at a Parisian café is the perfect time to enjoy one of the little pleasures of life … hot chocolate! Paris is famous for making rich and deliciously thick hot chocolate topped with puffs of whipped cream. We’ve been taste testing hot chocolate in some of Paris’ top spots … conduct your own Hot Chocolate Challenge and see if you agree with our taste testers!

1. Deep Discounts on Paris Perfect Rentals!

Drum roll please for our number one reason to visit Paris off season … Paris Perfect apartment rentals are 30-40% off!!! It’s the perfect way to create cherished memories with family or special friends. Girlfriend Getaways are very popular to de-stress after the holidays, and Winter/Spring Breaks are wonderful times to share the magic of Paris with your children or grandchildren. Christmas Market on the Champs-Elysées

Christmas Lights on the Champs Elysees

Christmas fun at the holiday market on the Champs-Elysées!

Every year the Champs-Elysées is transformed into a winter wonderland of holiday fun with the famous Christmas lights, tons of little wooden chalets selling traditional foods, sweets and all kinds of gifts and even a little amusement park with roller coaster and rides for kids. The air is full of a heady mix of mulled wine, roasting chestnuts, sweet cotton candy and crepes and every type of food you can imagine. I went on the first Saturday evening after the lights were switched on and the Christmas Market opened, and the atmosphere was festive and the streets packed!

Christmas Market Champs Elysees Lights Rond Point

Whimsical Christmas lights on the Champs-Elysées

There were crowds of people taking photos of the fun lights up and down the Champs-Elysées and around Rond Point. The Christmas Market is set up along both sides of the Champs-Elysées between Rond Point and the Place de la Concorde, but the atmosphere is festive all along the Champs-Elysées up to the Arc de Triomphe.

Christmas Market Champs Elysees Roasted Chestnuts

The delicious scent of roasting chestnuts along the Champs-Elysées

The scent of roasting chestnuts always reminds me of winter in Paris, and there were several little vendors set up roasting chestnuts along the Champs-Elysées. The chalets sell a fun mix of traditional holiday foods, decorations and gifts. This Christmas one was festive!

When it’s time to warm up just stop at one of the chalets for a vin chaud, or hot mulled wine. While I was distracted taking photos my husband bought a cup to surprise me … yum!

The circular lights along the Champs-Elysées slowly change colors from a cool blue-white to yellow and red. We hardly noticed them changing, but would look up and occasionally notice the street had a completely different hue!

The chalets selling crepes were very popular at the Champs-Elysées Christmas Market, but I had another plan in mind for something sweet.

There were chalets selling toys, handcrafted items, soaps from Marseille and this lovely stall filled to the brim with lavender products of all kind. The scent was divine!

We dashed across the Champs-Elysées and in the middle of the road I stopped to try to capture a photo of the lights looking toward the big ferris wheel at Place de la Concorde. The traffic was crazy!

For something sweet we stopped in the beautiful Ladurée shop on the Champs-Elysées. Why have a crepe when you can have macarons from Ladurée? (Or, enjoy both … it’s Christmas in Paris after all!)

The Christmas lights at Ladurée are so pretty this year! The line was a bit long at the take away counter, but it was worth the wait to get a box of their famous macarons to enjoy at home. Inspired by the roasted chestnuts on the Champs-Elysées, we tried the marron (chestnut) macaron. It was lovely! In the window at Ladurée we spotted a Christmas tree made out of macarons … who could ask for anything more?

If you’re thinking to visit Paris during the holidays, this is just one of the fun things you can do during Christmas in Paris. The Christmas Market on the Champs-Elysées will be open until January 6th, 2013. The lights and the festive atmosphere are magical against the backdrop of Paris!

Christmas Windows in Paris Printemps

Christian Dior create Christmas magic in the holiday windows at Printemps!

The holiday season in Paris isn’t complete without a visit to see the Christmas window displays at the Grand Magasins on Boulevard Haussmann near the sumptuous Opéra Garnier in the 9th arrondissment. Much like the anticipated Christmas windows at Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and other famous department stores in New York City, the windows at Printemps and Galeries Lafayette are a magical part of Christmas in Paris. We think each year that they couldn’t get any better, but every year we’re wowed by the creative designs and festive windows designed by some of the world’s top names in fashion. This year the Christmas windows at Printemps feature enchanting scenes created by Christian Dior while Galeries Lafayette is celebrating 100 years of the beautiful Art Nouveau glass dome with “The Ball of the Century” window displays created by Louis Vuitton and favorite Disney princesses. It’s a whimsical and fabulous Christmas with Printemps and Galeries Lafayette … come along and take a look!

Christian Dior has created an enchanting world of fashion – in miniature – for the gorgeous Christmas windows at the Printemps department store in Paris. Stepping up to the window it’s easy to get lost in the magical scenes featuring very fashionable dolls, or “Poupettes” as Dior has called them, which are wearing replicas of classic Dior designs. Each one of the 74 dolls has been created at Christian Dior’s Haute Couture workshop at their headquarters on Avenue Montaigne in Paris. The settings are whimsical and fun – absolutely captivating to all the visitors crowding along the streets to take a peek!

We loved the ice skating scene in one of the windows at Printemps with the Poupettes skating around a pretty setting against a backdrop of Parisian landmarks. Look closely and you’ll spot the entrance to Printemps in the backdround! And look even closer … one of the Poupettes must be new to ice skating, because she has taken a tumble and doesn’t look too pleased about it at all!

Oh no … one of the Poupettes has fallen on the ice!

There are also larger scale window displays with Dior’s gorgeous designs in Christmas reds and glittering golds. The windows are sumptuous, whimsical and visually stunning. If you’re in Paris this Christmas, don’t miss the chance to see these marvelous designs by Christian Dior!

The Cinderella window was one of the most popular with children … of all ages! There’s also the chance to see Cinderella’s carriage, which was surrounded by children captivated by the enchanting setting.
