Galeries Lafayette

Galeries Lafayette is the place to go if you’re looking for a last-minute gift for a loved one or a typical French souvenir.  Visit the information desk upon arrival and speak to one of the many multilingual greeters who will explain the layout of the store and the Christmas services offered.  They even have porters to help you carry your purchases!

Even if you’ve finished your Christmas shopping, it’s worth a trip to Galeries Lafayette just to see the beautiful decorations and window displays.  The exterior is illuminated by 2123m2 of lace lighting and the interior features a giant Christmas tree and more festive lighting.

If you’re not lucky enough to be in Paris at this wonderful time of year, the pictures and  video of the Printemps windows will hopefully let you feel part of the magic!

Best Place to Shop in Paris -- la rue de Commerce

Sharing One of our Paris Secrets — The Best Shopping Street in Paris!

Would you believe me if I told you that one of Paris’ best shopping streets is hidden just around the corner from the Eiffel Tower, surely the city’s most-visited monument? Follow along with me, and I’ll share with you this little shopping secret in Paris’ 15th arrondissement, just across the beautiful Champ de Mars gardens from our favorite neighborhood in the 7th arrondissement. It’s called rue du Commerce, a very appropriate name for a wonderful shopping street!

Rue du Commerce - a few minutes from the Eiffel Tower

There are over one hundred boutiques packed into this lovely tree-lined street. A shopping delight!

Over 100 boutiques packed into pretty tree-lined Paris avenue

The first time I walked along the rue du Commerce, I realized I had stumbled across one of the best hidden shopping streets in Paris. Not only for the selection, which covers everything from one-of-a-kind boutiques to affordable fashions, but because I was shopping where the locals go. As I stepped out in the street to take a few photos, I relished the fact that I was the only person in sight with a camera. If you’re visiting Paris, it’s a short walk from many of our vacation rentals in the 7th arrondissement.

The charming rue du Commerce is packed with boutiques on a quiet one-way street

Start at the top where Ave de la Motte Piquet meets rue du Commerce and plan on spending a leisurely morning or afternoon.  It’s only five minutes walk our newest Paris short term rentals, which we’re excited to share with you.  The Renoir and Monet Paris rentals boast show-stopping Eiffel Tower views and a perfect central location — close to Commerce, close to the renowned Grenelle open air market and near all the excellent restaurantse in the 7th.

Enjoy the shopping and also the neighborhood around the Champs de Mars Gardens for it’s a true Parisian village.  Stop for a café,  picnic in the park, have lunch and experience life as a Parisian. You’ll find every kind of fashion, from back-to-school wear to high French fashion!

Pretty flats with bows

Our college-age son needed some basics before going back to Boston last Fall.  He found the boat shoes he was looking for, nice polo shirts for a bargain price, cotton slacks in pale green and blue …. even underwear.  Everything is just that little bit different from clothes in the U.S. where he goes to college – the  latest colors, more tailored shirts and slacks.

There’s something for every age and taste – Frech fashion even for  middle-aged moms like me …

Brightly colored fashions on rue du Commerce

What we find so refreshing about rue du Commerce are the dozens of excellent fashion boutiques.  These stores sell the latest trends in fashion without the big expensive labels.  You don’t find them in the expensive couture streets in Paris.  Just ike Reciproque, the best designer consignment store in the nearby 16th, this is where in-the-know Parisians shop.

Les Soldes! The Paris Sales have begun!

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Yesterday, the banners went up throughout Paris: the sales have begun!!  Now is the perfect time to head to Paris – the weather is warming up, there’s some great festivals being held throughout the city and the sales have begun!

The Paris Sales Have Begun!

Wednesday marked the beginning of “Les Soldes”, the summer sales in France that see department stores, boutiques, designer outlets, and even hardware stores slashing the price of last season’s stock.  The dates for the sales are set by the Government and this year’s sales will run until Tuesday 26th July 2011.

Where to Grab a Bargain

If you prefer the convenience of buying everything under one roof, we recommend you start your assault on the sales at one of’ Paris’ major department stores.  Two of the largest stores, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, are located next to each other along Boulevard Haussmann.

You’ll also find sales at some of Paris’ best consignment stores and at brand-name stores such as Gap and H&M.  And, if you’re staying in a luxury Paris apartment rental in the 7th arrondissement, you can stroll to the Triangle d’Or, an area in Paris that is famous for some of the finest haute couture shops in the world.

Tips for Snagging the Best Buy & Surviving the Sales

  • Get there early for the best selection
As you would expect, you’re best chance to grab the perfect item in your size is to go shopping at the start of the sales.  You’ll find that many Parisians have already tried on their outfits before the sales so that they know exactly where to run when the doors open.
  • Get there late for the best prices
If you’re after a fairly generic item and the store is likely to have a lot of stock, you could try waiting until the end of the sales as most stores apply further discounts.  I’ve found this works for homewares but isn’t as good for clothing and shoes as my size seems to get snapped up quickly.
  • Try to avoid peak shopping times
Regardless of when you plan your attack on the sales, the shops will always be busy as many Parisians take time off work to scour for deals and tourists flock to the city for Summer.  I’ve always found that it’s a little quieter in the morning and frantic mid-afternoon.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothes & Shoes
This is definitely NOT the time to dress-to-impress with complicated outfits and high heels!  You need to be in and out of change rooms as fast as possible and you don’t want to have to cut your shopping trip short because of blistered feet.  Never underestimate just how large some of these stores are and how far you will have to walk.  I always wear a loose fitting dress and leggings that can be easily whipped off plus a pair of ballet flats – stylish but very, very comfortable!
  • Pack some snacks
If you’re a serious shopper, you won’t have time to eat.  Keep your energy levels up by packing a few easy-to-eat snacks such as muesli bars, nuts or a piece of fruit.  I’d also recommend taking a small bottle of water as hunting for bargains can be very thirsty work.
  • If you love it, buy it!
If you’ve been longing for a designer handbag that you saw in the window, now is the perfect time to rush back instore and see if it’s been discounted.  Go on, spoil yourself, you won’t regret it!
  • If you don’t love it, you probably don’t need it!
Ok, so I did say “probably”.  Every year I promise myself that I won’t buy something just because it’s on sale, and every year I end up with another item of clothing stashed at the top of the wardrobe so my husband doesn’t ask me why I haven’t worn it.  Which leads me to the next point…….
  • Double-check the refund policy
Many stores won’t allow you to return sale items so be sure to check the policy before you make a purchase.
  • Don’t forget the VAT refund
If you live in a non-EU country, you are entitled to claim the VAT back when taking purchases home.  To obtain the refund, simply spend €150 in one store, present your receipt at the Tax Refund Office instore, and then submit your form to the Customs desk when you arrive at the airport.  Be sure to have your goods on you!  For more information, see the official VAT refund scheme website.

Good luck and happy shopping!

And in Paris, what can you expect but the most beautiful or outrageous designs you can imagine.  In every color, with fur, buckles, sparkes and more.  Here are just a few…

Boots are the main fashion item in every store in Paris, including the Bon Marche which devoted rows and rows to them. I took so many pictures that store security approached me and told me no photos were allowed.  I had to laugh; the French don’t understand blogs, which can bring them business, not threaten it!

Christmas in Paris

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Christmas may be the most beautiful time of year to be in Paris!  The City of Light dazzles with festive holiday illuminations, choirs, concerts, and events to delight everyone, young and old alike.  Christmas tends to bring out the children in all of us, so whether you’re traveling with children or not, take a moment to enjoy all this fabulous city has to offer at Christmas time.

christmas-in-paris

Here are some of our favorite holiday happenings you must check out in Paris this season.

1. Ice Skating on the Eiffel Tower – Yes, beginning Dec. 15 through Feb. 9, you can actually ice skate on the first level of the Eiffel Tower!  I took my daughter skating on the Eiffel tower several years ago, and although the rink is small, it was pretty special to actually be skating at night when the light show came on!  Talk about a “wow” factor!  You’ll find details here.  Skating is free with admission to the Tower.  And if you like to skate at ground level, you’ll find several other rinks around Paris, including Hotel du Ville.  At our Hermitage Paris vacation rental, you’re so close to the Eiffel Tower that you’ll even see the skaters!

2. Christmas Markets – Wooden chalets line the streets with festive holiday markets, or Marché de Noel. Vendors set up a beautiful array of festive goods to tempt you with unique gift items and handcrafted specialties.  You’ll find artwork, jewelry, toys and delicious sweets.  Warm up with some Vin Chaud.  There are nearly a dozen different markets to choose from, but two of our favorites are the markets along the Champs Elysees and the Hotel du Ville.  You’ll find a full list of the markets here, courtesy of Courtney Traub at AboutParis.

3. Christmas Lights – Paris sparkles in all her glory as thousands of lights illuminate buildings, bridges, churches, and monuments.  It gets dark early in winter, so plan to stroll in a different neighborhood each evening to take in the holiday magic.  We love the grand department store Galeries Lafayette, which is bathed in lights both outside and inside.

And don’t miss the child-pleasing, elaborate animated window displays.  They put a riser in front of each window so even the smallest children can get a good view.

The trees along the Champs Elysees are enrobed in thousands of twinkling lights, and climb aboard the huge Ferris Wheel at the Place la Concorde for a dazzling view of the city lights.

And while you’re strolling, stop and enjoy a steaming Nutella crepe or roasted chestnuts from the street vendors.

4. Notre Dame – yes, it’s touristy, but is a beautiful place to visit, and not nearly as crowded as visiting in summer.  Our Notre Dame apartment rental for your vacation in Paris is a stone’s throw from this beautiful cathedral.

notre-dame-christmas-paris

There’s a lovely tree on display in the front courtyard, and we hope the beautiful lighted Nativity triptych panels are still on display.  Walk around to the back of the altar and look up, as the Nativity story is retold in beautiful lighted panels that come to life one story at a time.  Photos don’t do justice!

Here is the link to main Notre Dame Cathedrale website in English, which lists upcoming Christmas concerts and choirs, as well as the Mass schedule here.  Midnight Mass is very popular, so arrive early.

5.Traditional Holiday Food.  Réveillon is the term for the traditional holiday family dinner on Christmas Eve or New Year’s.  Christmas in France is all about eating “en famille”, enjoying the best France has to offer.  Fresh oysters from the Brittany coast and fois gras from the Dordogne, along with champagne, are served as appetizers, often followed by beef or duck.  Our family enjoys daube de boeuf, which is a slow-simmered beef stew, marinated in wine and herbs.  For dessert, the tradition cake is the Buche de Noel, or Yule Log.  Pierre Herme is one of our favorites, but for good value, Picard always has good pastries as well.

picard-pastries

We think this is an interesting twist on the traditional Yule Log, non?

picard-pastries-yule

Many restaurants will be closed on Christmas Day, so make reservations for Dec. 24 if you want to enjoy a nice holiday dinner out.  Enjoy 3 star dining just across the river from our Paris Vacation Rentals at the Four Seasons George V or the Plaza Athenee’.  A beautiful walk across the Alma Bridge.

Or if you’re staying in one of our luxury apartments, you can prepare your own holiday feast in your fully equipped kitchen to enjoy with your loved ones.  And remember, you don’t have to slave away all day in the kitchen, you can purchase many holiday items as “take out” (emporter).  The Rue Cler market in the 7th is a favorite.

And for the Epiphany on Jan. 6, you must try the Gallette des Rois, or King’s Cake. You’ll see these round golden cakes in the windows of almost every patisserie and boulangerie.

cake-shop

The cakes are made of puff pastry, with almond pastry cream, sometimes adorned with dried fruits, and are often given as gifts to commemorate the Wise Men’s gifts to the Christ child.

6.  Disney Christmas – If you’re looking for a treat for the children, Disneyland Paris hosts Disney Enchanted Christmas, Nov. 7- Jan. 6, with Santa, special holiday shows, festive decorations, and brilliant lights the kids are sure to love.

From all of us at Paris Perfect, we’d like to say thank you to all our guests, “Fans”, “Friends” and “Followers”, and we wish you a joyous holiday season, and blessings in the New Year.

Joyeux Noel & Bonne Année!

How to Dress for Winter Sightseeing in Paris – Think Chic!

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Parisian women are famous for their effortless style and innate fashion sense. So what are the rest of us to do when packing for a winter trip to Paris? Think simplicity, comfort and understated elegance.

Can an outfit be stylish yet comfortable too? Oui! Here are our suggestions for what to pack this winter:

  1. black-plus-neutralsBlack, plus neutrals – You will NEVER feel out of place in basic black. You will see black everywhere, from casual to business wear to formal attire. Choose black as your base, and mix with one or two other core neutrals, like cream (winter white), gray, or tan. Black slacks that are warm but comfortable will be your mainstay. French women wear chic jeans, with fashion boots or shoes, but never with running shoes. They would not be caught dead in public in athletic wear, unless they’re actually jogging on the Champs de Mars in the 7th! If you have the figure for it, skinny black jeans, or leggings to pair with sweaters, blouses, jackets, etc. are also good bets. If you grow tired of black, you can change up with gray or navy slacks.
  2. Overcoat – Paris winters can be cold and blustery, with some snowy days. But this is not the North Pole! You won’t need a parka! Low temperatures rarely fall below the 20’s F˚/-6 C˚, with highs in the upper 30’s to low 40’s F˚/-1 to 4 C˚. You may be comfortable with a nice all-weather overcoat or trench coat (black) with a zip out lining, or a black or charcoal wool pea coat, or “walking length” coat is always in style. We like this Michael Cors black trench coat.
    overcoat
  3. Scarves – Of course, no outfit is complete without a winter scarf. Wool, pashmina and cashmere are very popular. Bring one, but plan on buying several in Paris. For great prices on designer scarves, check out our favorite Paris designer consignment stores, Reciproque, where you can pick up a barely-worn Herme’ scarf for half the price. Alternatively, see what the best designer overstock store in Paris has on sale, Catherine Max. Both stores are located in the 16th arrondissement, a fun outing and easy hop from one to the other. Scarves make great gifts to bring home as well. For scarf bargains, check out Monoprix, like a smaller French Target, or even the stands outside the big department stores on Blvd. Haussman. And when someone asks you years later where you got that nice scarf, you reply, ”Oh this? I picked it up in Paris”. Here is a handy site we found that includes five different YouTube videos of how to tie your scarves. Check out the 4th video by Mireille Guiliano (author of French Women Don’t Get Fat). We like her unique idea.
  4. Boots – Boots of all styles are popular to pair with slacks. Now, the question is, can you really walk up and down the cobble stone hills of Montmartre in boots? Can you really find a comfortable boot that will see you through hours of strolling the Louvre? Maybe. We like Merrell or Clarke walking shoes for comfort, and have our eye on these black suede Clark boots. They look stylish yet comfortable too.

What are your favorite boots/shoes? If you’ve found a perfect combination of comfort and class, please share with our readers in the comments.

  5. Purse – Large fashion and designer bags are in style this season, but they take up room in your luggage, and remember, you don’t want to tote a heavy purse around sightseeing all day. Something lightweight, but large enough for a folding umbrella, a water bottle and map, and your other necessities (guess what color goes with everything?). Some ladies like a shoulder strap that can be worn across the chest or a body hugging style worn under the arm. We like the Baggallini brand, which is lightweight, sturdy, stylish and affordable. Their zip out shopping bag is an essential item for bringing back all your purchases! We like jackets that have inside zipped pockets for wallets. Alternatively, buy a tiny zipped bag that you can slip on under your jacket for valuables and mobile phone.
  6. sunny-days-in-winterGloves – A nice warm pair of (black!) kid gloves will do nicely. Save your ski gloves for Chamonix.
  7. Jewelry – Less is more. Think one or two nice pieces, like a belt over a sweater, a simple pair of earrings, or a fashion watch or bracelet. We strongly recommend leaving good jewelry at home, as you don’t want to tempt pick-pockets on the metro. Paris is generally very safe, but there’s no reason to tempt fate.
  8. Sunglasses –Why not? Many outdoor café’s are heated and like the French, you can sit outside sipping a café au lait in the winter sunshine in stylish sunglasses, looking very Catherine Deneuve! You probably won’t have too many sunny days in winter. But who cares?

Winter is a wonderful time to come to Paris! There is so much to see and do in Paris, you will never be bored! And what better reason to come to Paris in the winter than to save 30% off our gorgeous luxury Paris Perfect apartment rentals! Oh la la!

Our Favorite Kitchen Shops for Chefs

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The stores listed below cater to French chefs, with everything a restaurant needs from monogrammed dishes, blank menu boards, wonderful porcelain terrines, to knives, pots and pans, even Styrofoam shaped as the Eiffel Tower, which you can take home as a kitsch souvenir or use for cocktail parties, covered with cheeses and cold meats, tomatoes, and so on. (Yes, that’s what I use mine for.)

To get to both, go to Les Halles by Métro. Look for the beautiful old cathedral, St. Eustache. Walk down rue Montmartre, which runs along the right side of the cathedral, and you’ll enjoy seeing many of the fresh foods the chefs buy, especially foie gras and pâté de foie gras. There are interesting cooking supply stores on the way, plus a lovely old café on the left – with beautiful wood and tiles inside.

For Dehillerin, you’d pass down the left side of St. Eustache. There are several other chef’s stores in the area and it’s fun to wander around.

Summer Sales in Paris!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Got up early last week and took a nice long walk through my favorite streets in the 6th and 7th on the Left Bank . One thing was obvious, everything is on sale!

Thought you’d enjoy these pictures… Sales end in early August so if you’re planning a trip, get over here soon.

Some stores are already offering the second round of price cuts, up to 70% off

Other stores had signs that announced ‘prix ronds’. I wasn’t sure what it meant so asked friends; they said it means that everything is thrown into bins and cut to a single price ‘Everything in this bin for € 5!’ One store is ‘changing concept’ and I look forward to their new look this fall. Hand-lettered signs, professional signs, mega discounts, double discounts…shoes, handbags, furniture, accessories, underwear, swimsuits, coats, jackets …everything in Paris seems to be ON SALE!

But the store also features lesser-known designers such as Sprung Freres, Jonak, and La Martina. Her special sale concept began years ago, when Catherine rented storefronts throughout Paris to host her special ‘ventes’ of designer overstocks.  As she became well-known, designers themselves approached her to sell more more stock.  The “Ventes’ became so popular that she opened ehr own store at 17 Ave Raymond Poincare’ in the 16th arrondissement (just a few blocks from our excellent opthamologist if you need a recommendation.)  The store is in a modern building, a few blocks behind the Trocadero.

Guarding the store are not one but two security guards with ear pieces and radios, who check your bags as you go in, but most importantly stay on top of crowd control.  The big sales mean huge crowds of Parisians looking for a bargain. They come back regularly because merchandise turns over rapidly. You must be a member to shop here, for a reasonable price of Euros 20/year and you’ll receive the sale announcements by email. Alternatively, sign up at the front desk and start shopping.

The racks are packed with clothing as are the sale tables that line the store from Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta to Paul and Joe, N2, Gat Rimon and Gucci. If you know designer brands you’ll realize the value, although soft leather infant shoes for 40 Euros by jacadi (originally Euros 75) aren’t for the faint hearted.

Over the past year, the company has worked on their online offerings, realizing that not everyone can make it to the store every week.

Click here to view Catherine Max’s online store. It’s a little confusing to navigate but there are two general spaces, the Outlet where final clearance items are posted up to 80% off until they sell out.  And the Boutique which showcases emerging brands and designer sale goods at discount prices.

You have to live in Paris for their promised 72 hour delivery, but if you have a friend with a local address you’re ready to go.

After you’re done, stroll to the Trocadero and enjoy lunch at the Museum of Mankind, on a rise overlooking the Seine, Ecole Militaire and the Eiffel Tower.  It’s a beautiful spot that many don’t know about.  Or sit at one of the busy cafe’s with all of the chic Parisians in this in this beautiful neighborhood.
