Where to Say “I Love You” in Paris

I Love You in Paris

Our Paris Perfect team was recently asked by a guest where to propose to his girlfriend in Paris when he comes next spring. He is staying at the lovely and romantic Calvados apartment, where the balcony has been the ideal location for a number of engagements in its history!  You can even find candle wax on the paving where numerous suitors have lit dozens of candles in preparation for the special moment.

Our team had a wonderful time gathering some of our favorite romantic spots. Paris is a city of romance everywhere you turn, but here are some perfect places for saying “I love you,” surprising your loved one with a renewal of the vows or popping the big question in Paris!

The Eiffel Tower

Tom Cruise proposed to Katie on the Eiffel Tower

Tom Cruise proposed to Katie on the Eiffel Tower

Towering above the rooftops of Paris, lit with a golden glow at night or sparkling during the magical light show each evening, the Eiffel Tower is the classic spot in Paris to say “I love you.” Its romantic allure also makes it one of the most popular and irresistible spots to pop the question to your partner. Even Tom Cruise asked Katie Holmes to marry him on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower, and the whole world knows how that turned out! Another favorite is to make reservations at the Jules Verne restaurant on top level of the Eiffel Tower for a romantic and memorable proposal.

The Most Magical in Paris - Eiffel Tower Proposal

The Pont Alexandre III

One of our team’s favorite romantic spots in Paris is the beautiful Pont Alexandre III bridge that crosses the Seine between the Invalides and the Grand Palais. At sunrise or sunset, the golden statues and beautiful lamps create an unforgettably romantic setting overlooking the Seine River. Surprise your loved one with a moment of romance on one of Paris’ most lavish and beautiful bridges!

Romantic spots to propose in Paris

Paris Memories of a Lifetime

Promenade Plantées

The Promenade Plantées is very romantic and off the beaten path spot to pop the question. Once a railway line that has been cleverly replanted with charming gardens, it’s a lovely spot for a Sunday morning stroll. Stop by Le Reservoir for a Sunday jazz brunch, listen to fantastic music and then enjoy a stroll along the promenade.

Chateau de Versailles

Wedding at the Palace of Versailles

The palace and gardens of Versailles are a dreamy setting for your romantic moment or special proposal in Paris. Why not rent bikes and ride to the opposite end of the Grand Canal and propose with the chateau as your backdrop? Don’t forget the bottle of wine or champagne and picnic!

The Pont des Arts

Strolling along the Seine River and crossing one of its many bridges is a favorite leisurely pastime for romantics. Another perfect spot for saying “I love you” or asking that magical question is on the pretty Pont des Arts bridge. This pedestrian only bridge is a very romantic spot located near the Louvre and overlooking the Ile de la Cité.

Parc Monceau

If you’re in search of a peaceful garden setting for your romantic moment in Paris, visit the stunning English-style gardens at Parc Monceau. Propose to your loved one while strolling through the landscaped gardens and over the picturesque bridges. You’ll find Parc Monceau northeast of the Arc de Triomphe in the 8th arrondissement.

Carrousel du Louvre

Pyramid du Louvre Romantic Evening

With the Louvre as a backdrop, the Carrousel du Louvre is an impressive setting to wow your loved one with a romantic surprise. Sunset is the perfect time, and the setting is made complete by one of the many musicians you’ll often hear playing in the arcades.

Bois de Boulogne

In Love in Paris

Another romantic favorite is to rent a little paddle boat in the Bois de Boulogne gardens and propose floating on the small Lac Inférieur. Pack a picnic and enjoy a relaxing stroll through the gardens with your loved one for an unforgettable day in Paris.

Palais de Chaillot

Proposing in Paris the Palais de Chaillot

Across the Seine River from the Eiffel Tower you’ll find the Trocadéro and beautiful Palais de Chaillot that houses the Musée de l’Architecture. On the top floor of this fascinating museum, head to center window that looks straight out to a perfectly framed view of the Eiffel Tower. What a romantic spot to propose or say “I love you!” You’ll also enjoy strolling through the lovely first floor and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower.

Most Romantic Paris Perfect Apartments

Of course, one of our guests’ favorite spots for proposing, renewing vows and treasuring romantic moments together is on the balcony of one of our Paris Perfect apartments. Many feature those absolutely stunning Paris views that make a magical setting for romance.

The Magic of Paris – Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris

Midnight in Paris Movie Poster

If you have wandered the cobblestone streets of Paris, watched the setting sunlight reflected in the Seine or succumbed in any number of countless ways to the romance of Paris, you know how the beauty of this city sinks deep into your heart. If there’s anyone who can paint of portrait in film of this romance—of the city and the person who falls in love with it—it’s Woody Allen. Paris lovers are in luck, because Allen turned his creative eye on our beloved City of Light in his film Midnight in Paris released earlier this year. Where else but in Paris could one of the most delightful and romantic movies of the year be set? Guests at our Paris Perfect apartment rentals have asked where some the gorgeous scenes were filmed, and we reveal all here. Come along with us and fall in love with the magic of Paris by visiting some of our favorite locations where Woody Allen filmed Midnight in Paris!

Famous Sights of Paris

The movie opens with a gorgeous montage that makes Midnight in Paris a must see on the big screen if you can. This is Paris at its most magical—the monuments, the views, the changing colors—everything that draws you in. The romantic montage is the perfect backdrop for a conversation between a man, obviously smitten with Paris, and a woman who decidedly does not share his views.

The Magic of Paris

The romance of Paris!

Monet’s Garden in Giverny

Swept away by the romance of Paris, we land in the peaceful gardens of Giverny where  a blond haired couple stand on the bridge where Monet created so many of his dreamy waterlily paintings. The magic of Paris has found its way into the romantic and nostalgic heart of Gil (played by Owen Wilson), a Hollywood screenwriter struggling through his first novel. Gil is on holiday in Paris with his much more practically minded fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) and her conservative parents. With differing views on many points, Gil and Inez naturally disagree on the charms of Paris. Gil has fallen in love with the romance of Paris and finds inspiration for his novel around every corner, while Inez is much more focused on their upcoming wedding.

Claude Monet's Garden in Giverny

Located just 80 km west of Paris, Monet’s gardens at Giverny is a wonderful day trip from Paris. Enjoy a day strolling through the landscape that inspired Monet, and then head back to Paris to see the paintings he created just like Gil and Inez do in Midnight in Paris.

Monet’s Water Lilies at L’Orangerie

Admiring Monet at l'Orangerie

Admiring Monet at l'Orangerie

Gil and Inez are driven further apart when they bump into John and Carol, friends of Inez from America. Although John is quite pompous, and a “pseudo intellectual” as Gil describes him, Inez finds his know-it-all attitude captivating while Gil finds him pedantic. The two couples visit the Musée de l’Orangerie, admiring Monet’s mesmerizing Les Nymphéas paintings inspired by the gardens at Giverny.

The Rodin Museum

Gil and Inez also visit the beautiful Rodin Museum with Paul and Carol, one of our favorite spots in the 7th arrondissement. While Paul promenades through the gardens extolling his misinformed knowledge of Rodin, he is politely corrected by the museum guide played by the beautiful First Lady of France Carla Bruni. Gil is taken by the museum guide, and he returns to ask her help during his later adventures in Paris.

Owen Wilson & Carla Bruni in a scene at the Rodin Museum

The Rodin Museum is set in a beautiful 18th-century mansion where the artist lived and worked. The peaceful gardens, famous for the varieties of roses, form a lovely backdrop to Rodin’s sculptures on display. Although we would much prefer to have Carla Bruni as our guide rather than Paul!

Midnight in Paris Locations

The battle of the guides at the Rodin Museum

Palace and Gardens of Versailles

Paul is the know-it-all leader as the couples make another day trip from Paris to the Chateau de Versailles. The more time Gil spends listening to Paul talk while his finacée soaks it up without questioning anything, the more he wants to discover the Paris that he finds inspirational. Inez, however, is much more interested in the pseudo intellectual Paris offered by Paul.

A daytrip to Versailles in Midnight in Paris

Strolling through the stunning gardens at Versailles like Gil and Inez is a magical moment. There is still that feeling of royal splendor that makes it seem like you could turn a corner and find that you’ve stepped back into history, too! Only 20 km southwest of Paris, the Palace of Versailles is easily reachable by train from the center of the city.

Hotel Le Bristol

Gil and Inez stay in the luxurious five star Hôtel Le Bristol in the 8th arrondissement, and many of the scenes were shot there, including the amusing scene where Gil tries to explain his dressed up appearance for his inspirational walks through Paris at night. Inez has no idea of the adventures she’s missing!

For a luxurious stay in Paris without the unbelievable cost of a 5 star hotel, consider a stay in one of our gorgeous Paris Perfect luxury apartments in the 7th arrondissement. Enjoy romantic views of Paris, fabulous central locations, elegant décor and the comforts of your own apartment in one of our many apartments just across the Seine from the Le Bristol, such as our Champagne or Volnay Paris rentals.

Le Grand Vefour

The restaurant Le Grand Véfour exudes 18th-century Parisian glamour, and is the setting Woody Allen chose for a lunch scene with Gil, Inez and her parents. Located in the arcades of the lovely Palais Royal in the 1st arrondissement, Le Grand Véfour has been a Parisian institution for over 200 years. We love the wonderful shopping and the pretty gardens at the Palais Royal, which are very near our grand Musigny three bedroom apartment.

Les Puces de Saint-Ouen

Gil and Inez visit the famous Paris flea market Les Puces de Saint-Ouen located at Porte de Clignancourt. While Inez shops, Gil meets Gabrielle, a friendly woman selling antiques and memorabilia who shares his passion for the music and art of 1920s Paris.

Gil talking to Léa Seydoux's Gabrielle

You can visit Les Puces during your holiday in Paris, and perhaps discover a treasure from the past, too. It covers seven hectares and is the largest antique market in the world, receiving between 120,000 to 180,000 visitors each weekend. We often visit the markets to find beautiful antiques to decorate our luxury Paris apartment rentals. We even have some great hints and tips to help you navigate Les Puces on your next visit!

Seine River

Just like Gil, I love walking along the banks of the Seine. It doesn’t matter what time of day—early morning as the sun rises, or sunset when the city turns pink, or at night when the lights stretch across the dark water—it’s always beautiful. The heart of Paris is small enough that you can walk to many favorite spots, and that’s just what Gil does.

Gil takes a contemplative stroll by the River Seine.

Whether it’s during the day or during Gil’s fantastical midnight adventures in 1920s Paris, many scenes in the movie were filmed along the Seine. On one of his walks he passes Les Bouquinistes, the bookstalls lining the Seine that sell antique and secondhand books, prints and many other treasures.

In another scene with Gil and the museum guide played by Carla Bruni, they sit in the beautiful garden behind the Cathedral of Notre Dame on the Ile de la Cité island in the middle of the Seine River. This is such a peaceful and romantic spot in Paris, and not far from our Echézeaux two bedroom Paris apartment overlooking the Ile de la Cité’s charming Place Dauphine.

Deyrolle

Shopping at Deyrolle

Unusual finds at Deyrolle in Paris

Deyrolle—perhaps one of Paris’ most unusual shops—is the perfectly surreal setting for Gil’s midnight adventures in Paris. Founded in 1831, this store dates from the time of French Kings and Queens. The ground floor of Deyrolle has been transformed into a chic gardening store called Le Prince Jardinier.

I'm not sure if I'd host a cocktail party in Deyrolle!

Deyrolle is located on rue du Bac, less than 5 mintes from several of our Paris apartment rentals including:  Nuits Saint Georges and Corton.

Famous Literary Cafés

Fitting right in with the literary and artistic ambiance of Midnight in Paris is a stroll along the Boulevard Saint-Germain to St-Germain-des-Prés, long considered the literary heart and soul of Paris. Gil’s nighttime adventures take him back into the world of writers and artists and the lively café scene they created in Paris. Since Le Precope, the world’s first coffeehouse, opened in 1686, artists, writers and eminent intellectuals have made the St-Germain-des-Prés cafés their regular haunts. Soak up the nostalgic atmosphere at the most famous cafés, Les Deux Magots, Café de Flore, Le Precope, Brasserie Lipp and Café Bonaparte.

Café de Flore - popular with philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir.

Shakespeare and Company

With his real life literary pursuits and his nighttime adventures with the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway and Gertrude Stein to just name a few, is no surprise that we see Gil leave the famous Shakespeare and Company bookstore just across the Seine from Notre Dame. It still draws a large and artistic expat crowd, and is a fun stop while exploring the Ile de la Cité and the Latin Quarter!

The Latin Quarter

Gil’s nighttime adventures into the Paris of the 1920s begin in the Latin Quarter, where he gets lost one night. As he sits down on the steps of the church Saint Etienne-du-Mont near the Panthéon in the 5th arrondissement, a vintage car pulls up and a group of partygoers in 1920s clothing invite him inside. Time and time again in the movie, he returns to this small flight of stairs on the side of Saint Etienne-du-Mont at the stroke of midnight to travel back in time.

Pont Alexandre III

At the end of Midnight in Paris, Gil meets Gabrielle again and offers to walk her home in the rain. Woody Allen captures the magic and romance of Paris in the rain as they walk across the Pont Alexandre III, one of the most extravagantly beautiful bridges over the Seine.

The Pagoda Cinema on rue Babylone in Paris is an historical landmark

1.) The Pagoda Cinema in the 7th arrondissement is an icon renowned for its architecture and as a temple for independent films in Paris. It was built in 1896 by the founder of the Bon Marche Department store, who wanted to give an authentic Japanese Temple to his wife.  It was imported section by section from Japan and used as a ballroom until the 1920′s  until the couple divorced. It was known for sumptuous parties and events.  A new owner took over in 1931 and it has been one of the leading independent cinemas in Paris.

Amazing Art Nouveau Building in Paris

One of the many reasons that I love staying in the 7th arrondissement in Paris is that I feel that there is something wonderful, and often unexpected, to discover around every corner. Like the first time I turned a corner and stood face to face with Jules Lavirotte’s outrageous Art Nouveau masterpiece on avenue Rapp, just around the corner from the sweet Kir vacation apartment.  Step on the balcony of the Chardonnay Paris rental and you can see the building at the end of the street.   This Lavirotte building that will stop you in your tracks!

Paris Fun Travel Tip from Madelyn:  This idea reminds me of the Where’s Wally books which our children loved! Head to 29 Ave Rapp and call it a mystery discovery adventure for children and adults.   Look carefully to discover the many whimsical details on this building — from the windows above the door that look like Martian’s eyes, to the bison heads which holding up balconies, lizard door handles, fox-headed fur collars, fantastical fish, wonderful curves and shapes, young women and men.

Oxen heads hold up the balcony, can you find it?

Can you find the phantasmagorical fish head at 29 Ave Rapp?

How many faces are hidden in the facade?

There are several whimsical examples of Parisian Art Nouveau architecture tucked away in quiet spots in the 7th arrondissement. This photographic tour will show you the best Art Nouveau in the 7th, just steps from the Eiffel Tower and the famous rue Cler market street. Strolling through the neighborhoods to see them all would make a pleasant morning or afternoon walk through one of our favorite neighborhoods in Paris.

Square Rapp and Jules Lavirotte

Beautiful Square Rapp to Start Your Art Nouveau Tour in Paris

Start out in the peaceful little square Rapp, where you’ll find a pretty Art Nouveau facade at number 3 square Rapp. This is the work of Jules Lavirotte (1864-1928), one of France’s most brilliant and fearless Art Nouveau architects and designers. He was a contemporary of the better known Hector Guimard, but the two architects never worked together. For lovers of Art Nouveau design, Lavirotte’s work represents the most freeform and audacious designs you can find in Paris. He worked very little in Paris, and the best examples of his unique Baroque inspired Art Nouveau are all found in the 7th arrondissement. In square Rapp, notice the complete lack of symmetry in the design of the facade and the elaborate balconies, each one different from the next. It’s hard to know where to look first!

paris-art-nouveau-3-square-rapp-entrance paris-art-nouveau-3-square-rapp-ceramic

The elaborate main entrance and balconies feature fine stone carving and highly decorative cast iron details. Look at each balcony one by one to see Lavirotte’s creative designs. You’ll even spot a turret built into one floor in the corner!

paris-art-nouveau-3-square-rapp-turret2paris-art-nouveau-square-rapp-trellis1

It’s fun to stop by square Rapp to see its other unusual decorative features. At the end of the wall is a five or six story tall trellis design on the wall of an architectural 3D design. Turn around and take in the full view of the Eiffel Tower just across the street. What a view! Lavirotte also designed the iron gate in the square that encloses his building.

paris-art-nouveau-square-rapp-eiffel-tower

29 avenue Rapp

Just around the corner at 29 avenue Rapp is Jules Lavirotte’s masterpiece. Whether or not you love it or find it shocking, it’s hard not to stop and stare at this outstanding building. Lavirotte designed this wildly decorated facade in 1901 for his friend Alexandre Bigot. A frequent collaborator, Bigot was a talented ceramist and he gave Lavirotte complete freedom with the design for this building. Bigot created the ceramic details himself, working closely with Lavirotte to execute his outrageous and lavish designs, along with the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Larrivé. Read more about the buildings Lavirotte designed in the 7th arrondissement of Paris on Wikipedia.

You’ll need some time to take in all the details, especially around the impressive entrance. It is said that the bust of a woman above the door is a portrait of Lavirotte’s wife, who was also an artist. Look closely and you’ll spot a fox fur wrapped around her neck! Much like an painter signing a canvas, Lavirotte left his signature on his masterpiece on a decorative plate. While his style wasn’t unanimously loved during his lifetime, this building did earn Lavirotte first place in the prestigious Parisian Facade competition of 1901.

12 rue Sédillot

Just off of the rue St-Dominique is another example of the always lively Art Nouveau architecture of Jules Lavirotte. As you stroll along rue St-Dominique, think back to the Countess de Montessuy who lived on this street and who was the first patron to give Lavirotte the chance to work in Paris. The tower over the main entrance is a Medieval inspired touch and just one of the many styles Lavirotte incorporated into his Art Nouveau designs. This is now the Italian Liceo, or School and you’ll enjoy recess time as dozens of chattering Italian children pour outside.  Rent the Pauillac Paris vacation rental and you will enjoy studying the facade from your balcony.

The whimsical ironwork around the entrance and ground floor windows is classic Lavirotte. Today his building is home to the Liceo Italiano Leonardo Da Vinci, an Italian high school.

33 rue du Champ-de-Mars

33 rue du Champs de Mars near rue Cler

While the 16th arrondissement is home to the largest number of Art Nouveau buildings, one of the masterpieces of this architectural style is tucked into a quiet little street near the Champ de Mars park in the 7th arrondissement. Just a few blocks from the famous market street rue Cler and many of our vacation rental apartments, the facade at 33 rue du Champ-de-Mars is one of the finest Art Nouveau buildings in Paris. Designed by Octave Raquin in 1904, this building earned the nickname “maison des arums,” or the house of the lilies, because of its lavish floral and vegetal designs and decorations.

The main entrance features an arched glass cover supported by detailed cast iron work that is reminiscent of Hector Guimard’s famous entrance covers to the Paris Metro. The other doors on the facade are decorated with glass panels with delicate cast iron climbing vines. Look closely between the ground floor windows and you’ll spot an arum lily motif carved out of stone, just one of the many lilies that earned this building its pretty name.

151 rue de Grenelle

After the extravagance of Jules Lavirotte’s buildings on avenue and square Rapp, you could easily walk right past 151 rue de Grenelle and not notice the architect’s first building in the 7th arrondissement. When you stop and take a closer look, however, much of Lavirotte’s favorite design elements are already on display in this elegant facade from 1899. Take a look at the grand window above the main entrance with its elaborate flower decorations carved in stone. The front door features whimsical ironwork shapes and two very unique door handles – lizards!  The one on the left is eating a corn cob while the one on the right, below, looks on eagerly. The lizard was a favorite symbol and appears again and again in the work of Lavirotte.

Art Nouveau treasures like these buildings are found throughout Paris, and we hope you enjoy seeing some of our favorites in the 7th arrondissement. Just keep your eyes looking up as you’re out strolling – another architectural surprise may be just around the next corner!

Christmas in Paris

Friday, December 17th, 2010

Christmas may be the most beautiful time of year to be in Paris!  The City of Light dazzles with festive holiday illuminations, choirs, concerts, and events to delight everyone, young and old alike.  Christmas tends to bring out the children in all of us, so whether you’re traveling with children or not, take a moment to enjoy all this fabulous city has to offer at Christmas time.

christmas-in-paris

Here are some of our favorite holiday happenings you must check out in Paris this season.

1. Ice Skating on the Eiffel Tower – Yes, beginning Dec. 15 through Feb. 9, you can actually ice skate on the first level of the Eiffel Tower!  I took my daughter skating on the Eiffel tower several years ago, and although the rink is small, it was pretty special to actually be skating at night when the light show came on!  Talk about a “wow” factor!  You’ll find details here.  Skating is free with admission to the Tower.  And if you like to skate at ground level, you’ll find several other rinks around Paris, including Hotel du Ville.  At our Hermitage Paris vacation rental, you’re so close to the Eiffel Tower that you’ll even see the skaters!

2. Christmas Markets – Wooden chalets line the streets with festive holiday markets, or Marché de Noel. Vendors set up a beautiful array of festive goods to tempt you with unique gift items and handcrafted specialties.  You’ll find artwork, jewelry, toys and delicious sweets.  Warm up with some Vin Chaud.  There are nearly a dozen different markets to choose from, but two of our favorites are the markets along the Champs Elysees and the Hotel du Ville.  You’ll find a full list of the markets here, courtesy of Courtney Traub at AboutParis.

3. Christmas Lights – Paris sparkles in all her glory as thousands of lights illuminate buildings, bridges, churches, and monuments.  It gets dark early in winter, so plan to stroll in a different neighborhood each evening to take in the holiday magic.  We love the grand department store Galeries Lafayette, which is bathed in lights both outside and inside.

And don’t miss the child-pleasing, elaborate animated window displays.  They put a riser in front of each window so even the smallest children can get a good view.

The trees along the Champs Elysees are enrobed in thousands of twinkling lights, and climb aboard the huge Ferris Wheel at the Place la Concorde for a dazzling view of the city lights.

And while you’re strolling, stop and enjoy a steaming Nutella crepe or roasted chestnuts from the street vendors.

4. Notre Dame – yes, it’s touristy, but is a beautiful place to visit, and not nearly as crowded as visiting in summer.  Our Notre Dame apartment rental for your vacation in Paris is a stone’s throw from this beautiful cathedral.

notre-dame-christmas-paris

There’s a lovely tree on display in the front courtyard, and we hope the beautiful lighted Nativity triptych panels are still on display.  Walk around to the back of the altar and look up, as the Nativity story is retold in beautiful lighted panels that come to life one story at a time.  Photos don’t do justice!

nativity

Here is the link to main Notre Dame Cathedrale website in English, which lists upcoming Christmas concerts and choirs, as well as the Mass schedule here.  Midnight Mass is very popular, so arrive early.

5.Traditional Holiday Food.  Réveillon is the term for the traditional holiday family dinner on Christmas Eve or New Year’s.  Christmas in France is all about eating “en famille”, enjoying the best France has to offer.  Fresh oysters from the Brittany coast and fois gras from the Dordogne, along with champagne, are served as appetizers, often followed by beef or duck.  Our family enjoys daube de boeuf, which is a slow-simmered beef stew, marinated in wine and herbs.  For dessert, the tradition cake is the Buche de Noel, or Yule Log.  Pierre Herme is one of our favorites, but for good value, Picard always has good pastries as well.

picard-pastries

We think this is an interesting twist on the traditional Yule Log, non?

Many restaurants will be closed on Christmas Day, so make reservations for Dec. 24 if you want to enjoy a nice holiday dinner out.  Enjoy 3 star dining just across the river from our Paris Vacation Rentals at the Four Seasons George V or the Plaza Athenee’.  A beautiful walk across the Alma Bridge.

Or if you’re staying in one of our luxury apartments, you can prepare your own holiday feast in your fully equipped kitchen to enjoy with your loved ones.  And remember, you don’t have to slave away all day in the kitchen, you can purchase many holiday items as “take out” (emporter).  The Rue Cler market in the 7th is a favorite.

And for the Epiphany on Jan. 6, you must try the Gallette des Rois, or King’s Cake. You’ll see these round golden cakes in the windows of almost every patisserie and boulangerie.

The cakes are made of puff pastry, with almond pastry cream, sometimes adorned with dried fruits, and are often given as gifts to commemorate the Wise Men’s gifts to the Christ child.

How to Dress for Winter Sightseeing in Paris – Think Chic!

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Parisian women are famous for their effortless style and innate fashion sense. So what are the rest of us to do when packing for a winter trip to Paris? Think simplicity, comfort and understated elegance.

Can an outfit be stylish yet comfortable too? Oui! Here are our suggestions for what to pack this winter:

  1. black-plus-neutralsBlack, plus neutrals – You will NEVER feel out of place in basic black. You will see black everywhere, from casual to business wear to formal attire. Choose black as your base, and mix with one or two other core neutrals, like cream (winter white), gray, or tan. Black slacks that are warm but comfortable will be your mainstay. French women wear chic jeans, with fashion boots or shoes, but never with running shoes. They would not be caught dead in public in athletic wear, unless they’re actually jogging on the Champs de Mars in the 7th! If you have the figure for it, skinny black jeans, or leggings to pair with sweaters, blouses, jackets, etc. are also good bets. If you grow tired of black, you can change up with gray or navy slacks.
  2. Overcoat – Paris winters can be cold and blustery, with some snowy days. But this is not the North Pole! You won’t need a parka! Low temperatures rarely fall below the 20’s F˚/-6 C˚, with highs in the upper 30’s to low 40’s F˚/-1 to 4 C˚. You may be comfortable with a nice all-weather overcoat or trench coat (black) with a zip out lining, or a black or charcoal wool pea coat, or “walking length” coat is always in style. We like this Michael Cors black trench coat.

  3. Scarves – Of course, no outfit is complete without a winter scarf. Wool, pashmina and cashmere are very popular. Bring one, but plan on buying several in Paris. For great prices on designer scarves, check out our favorite Paris designer consignment stores, Reciproque, where you can pick up a barely-worn Herme’ scarf for half the price. Alternatively, see what the best designer overstock store in Paris has on sale, Catherine Max. Both stores are located in the 16th arrondissement, a fun outing and easy hop from one to the other. Scarves make great gifts to bring home as well. For scarf bargains, check out Monoprix, like a smaller French Target, or even the stands outside the big department stores on Blvd. Haussman. And when someone asks you years later where you got that nice scarf, you reply, ”Oh this? I picked it up in Paris”. Here is a handy site we found that includes five different YouTube videos of how to tie your scarves. Check out the 4th video by Mireille Guiliano (author of French Women Don’t Get Fat). We like her unique idea.
  4. Boots – Boots of all styles are popular to pair with slacks. Now, the question is, can you really walk up and down the cobble stone hills of Montmartre in boots? Can you really find a comfortable boot that will see you through hours of strolling the Louvre? Maybe. We like Merrell or Clarke walking shoes for comfort, and have our eye on these black suede Clark boots. They look stylish yet comfortable too.

What are your favorite boots/shoes? If you’ve found a perfect combination of comfort and class, please share with our readers in the comments.

  5. Purse – Large fashion and designer bags are in style this season, but they take up room in your luggage, and remember, you don’t want to tote a heavy purse around sightseeing all day. Something lightweight, but large enough for a folding umbrella, a water bottle and map, and your other necessities (guess what color goes with everything?). Some ladies like a shoulder strap that can be worn across the chest or a body hugging style worn under the arm. We like the Baggallini brand, which is lightweight, sturdy, stylish and affordable. Their zip out shopping bag is an essential item for bringing back all your purchases! We like jackets that have inside zipped pockets for wallets. Alternatively, buy a tiny zipped bag that you can slip on under your jacket for valuables and mobile phone.
  6. sunny-days-in-winterGloves – A nice warm pair of (black!) kid gloves will do nicely. Save your ski gloves for Chamonix.
  7. Jewelry – Less is more. Think one or two nice pieces, like a belt over a sweater, a simple pair of earrings, or a fashion watch or bracelet. We strongly recommend leaving good jewelry at home, as you don’t want to tempt pick-pockets on the metro. Paris is generally very safe, but there’s no reason to tempt fate.
  8. Sunglasses –Why not? Many outdoor café’s are heated and like the French, you can sit outside sipping a café au lait in the winter sunshine in stylish sunglasses, looking very Catherine Deneuve! You probably won’t have too many sunny days in winter. But who cares?

Winter is a wonderful time to come to Paris! There is so much to see and do in Paris, you will never be bored! And what better reason to come to Paris in the winter than to save 30% off our gorgeous luxury Paris Perfect apartment rentals! Oh la la!

Beautiful Reflections on the Seine River

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

I love running or walking along the Seine. Doesn’t matter what time of day, how fast or slow…it’s always beautiful. The heart of Paris is small enough that you can walk to many favorite spots, walk all the way from the Eiffel Tower to past Notre Dame without getting tired – but large enough to offer an amazing diversity of buildings, sites and monuments!

On my last run the Seine was so calm that I had fun taking pictures of the reflections of buildings in the river…It was so smooth that you could recognize the museum or landmark, even without seeing the original above.

The Exquisite Jacquemart André Museum in Paris

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

If you lack the time (or energy) to fight the crowds at the Louvre or Musée d’Orsay, but still want to enjoy glorious paintings, sculptures and works of art, Paris has several smaller, more manageable art museums with world class exhibits.

The Jacquemart André Museum is an exquisite 19th century mansion, and former private residence of art connoisseurs Edouard André and Nélie Jacquemart.

Edouard was the son of a prominent banking family, and devoted his sizable fortune to amassing an extraordinary private collection of French, Italian and Dutch masterpieces. Edouard married prominent painter Nelié Jacquemart in 1881, and together they traveled throughout Europe each year to acquire rare treasures for their collection. Under the guidance of the most prominent museum curators of the time, the couple built a world class collection of paintings, tapestries, sculpture and frescos. Their philosophy was that great art was meant to be shared, and upon Edouard’s death, Nelié completed the collection and bequeathed it, along with the mansion, to the Institut de France, to be converted to a museum. The mansion opened to the public in 1913.

Highlights of the permanent collection include:
Dutch 17th century masters: Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Ruysdael
French 18th century: Fragonard, Boucher, Vigée-Lebrun, Nattier
English masters: Reynolds, Hoppner, Lawrence
Italian Renaissance 15th century sculptures & paintings: Bellini, Botticelli, Mantegna, Uccello

Temporary exhibits change with the season. In 2010, from 12 March until 1 August, you can experience Spanish masters from El Greco to Dali.

One of the highlights of your visits should be a stop in the Jacquemart André Tea Room, where you can enjoy lunch or coffee and pastries surrounded by beautiful Belgian tapestries and a fresco by Tiepolo. In the summer months, the Tea Room extends service to the adjacent courtyard. Indoors or out, you’ll be in one of the most beautiful tea rooms in Paris.
