Learning French in Paris

Many of our guests want to brush up on their French when they’re in Paris.  It’s a terrific activity and there are so many options available --from individual courses to small group lessons, to conversation get-togethers only.

We’ve spent hours researching French classes in Paris including French language schools, French conversation groups and French classes throughout Paris.  We hope you find it useful! 

We start with summer classes in Paris for familites because many of our Paris Perfect Apartment guests have asked where they can find classes for themselves and their children during their Paris vacation.

Summer French Courses for Children and Adults

Accord
Accord is one of the largest language schools in Paris offers courses for French families throughout July and August.  This is one of the most established programs and the location is convenient to many of our Paris apartment rentals, such as the Richebourg Paris rental and the Champagne apartment in Paris.  The summer courses are located at the end of our Metro Line 8, near Balard.

Year round courses for adults are described under the 9th arrondissement; they come well recommended.

American School of Paris
The American School of Paris has a summer extension program from late summer through July. It is an excellent program with lots of sports and activities. French courses are offered for the last two weeks of the program - different courses for lower, middle and upper school children. It gets high marks from the parents who have sent their children there. Email for more information.

Montessori School
The Montessori School at the American Church on the Quai d’Orsay offers weekly classes in French for children aged 3 to 6.  A five minute walk from many of our apartment rentals such as the Côte de Nuits two bedroom Paris apartment and the Bergerac three bedroom Paris rental. Recommended by many of our guest families.

Completude
Your children probably won’t thank me for this suggestion, but when our children were struggling with grammaire, mathématiques and other French subjects, we signed them up for a French tutor at Completude.  Our tutor was an experienced French teacher who came to our apartment and worked with our son several hours a day.  He wasn’t happy, but his grades improved!

Completude offers high quality tutoring (SoutienScolaire) throughout the year.  The tutors are well qualified, either teachers or graduates and they can be flexible to your needs.  Not meant to be ‘fun’, since the original goal is to help French student improve their grades – but they are flexible. Sign up for private tutoring and we guarantee they’ll  help you or your children speak better French –  and it’s more fun for them than reciting all the subjunctive of French verbs for hours on end.

Important note: the website is in French and a little complex to navigate.  You also cannot call the free phone number because it only works in France.  However, if you email them in English, they are nice and helpful.  

If you’re staying with us in our Paris rentals near the 7th arrondissement, it’s a ten minute walk to their head offices.

Conversation Groups

WICE
This is one of my favorite resources in Paris and I strongly recommend their language courses and their many other offerings, from Art History to Wine Tasting, Creative Writing and more.

French courses range from Absolute Beginner to ‘False Beginner’ – love that phrase -- to Intermediate, Advanced and French Conversation.  There is bound to something at your level!

This non-profit organization was founded over 30 years ago and is run by English speaking women in Paris. For a reasonable joining fee they sponsor fascinating History and Art tours, language and conversation classes and much, much more.  If you come to Paris regularly, this is an excellent resource.

The location is in the 15th arrondissement, very convenient to many of our Paris Perfect apartments located in the 6th and 7th arrondissements.  Walk to the Mottle Piquet metro and you’re there in four minutes.

Parler Parlor French-English Conversation Group
One of the longest standing English/French conversation groups in Paris.  Meet people from around the world and practice speaking English for 45 minutes and French for 45 minutes.  Small groups of 6 to 8.  Classes held three times a week in either the 1st or 6th arrondissements.  Your first session is free and you can then purchase a one-time pass or a 10-session, 20-session or 6 month card.

Konversando
Konversando is a language club in the center of Paris, near the Opera and the Palais Royal.  You can choose to participate in a Guided Conversation as part of a group or a Free Conversation where you practice each other's language in pairs or mini-groups.

These schools are easy to get to from most of our apartments, including The Pinot apartment in Paris and La Grande Dame, a gorgeous 3 bedroom apartment with balconies and full Eiffel view.  Directions: Hop onthe 42 bus from Avenue de la Bourdonnais or  stroll across the river and have a beautiful walk.

Institut Parisien
Established in 1988, the Institut Parisien de Langue et de Civilisation Françaises offers a wide range of French language courses including classes for beginners, general courses, conversational workshops, phonetic workshops, written workshops and one-to-one courses.

Alliance Française
Located in the heart of Paris, Allicance Française is the Granddaddy of language classes with general French courses (intensive or extensive), workshops, professional courses, evening courses and customized courses for corporate clients.  Centrally located on the Left Bank near the Latin Quarter, Saint Germain des Prés.

The school is striking distance from these great Paris rentals:  Corton and Nuits Sts. Georges apartments in Paris.  If you’re staying near the Eifel Tower, take the 87 bus direct!

Institut de Langue et de Culture Française (ILCF)
The ILCF Paris, a department of the Catholic University of Paris, offers French language courses for foreigners, specialized French courses (business French, written French, Oral French and phonetics) and courses of culture and civilization (arts, cinema, history, literature, economy and politics).  You can do a full semester course, monthly intensive course,  or an evening course.  Courses are open to all levels, all year round.

L’etoile Paris
L'étoile is located near the famous Department Store "Le Bon Marché" . L'étoile offers different types of classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced students as well as one month intensive courses in July and September.  They also host annual events such as a Christmas party and end of session celebrations.

 A short and beautiful walk from the Chassagne rental in Paris and the Chateau Doree Paris rental, both located on the fabulous rue de Seine.  Or hop on the bus and be there in a few minutes from apartments such as the Merlot, Saint Julien, Cote de Nuits and others.

The Institut de Langue Française (I.L.F.) is foreign-language schools located in a beautiful Hausmannian building near the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysées.  Offers a wide variety of courses including spelling courses, intensive and extensive classes, French conversation, private classes, summer classes etc.

Walking distance from apartments such as the Bergerac, Calvados and others or hop on the 92 bus and go directly there in a few minutes.

Accord
Accord is one of the largest language schools in Paris and easily accessible from many Paris locations.  The main school is located near the big department stores such as Printemps or Galerie Lafayette. Weekly programs are offered at all levels with a placement test to assess your level. 

Accord is one of the only schools to offer summer classes for families and children (Children ages aged 6 to 16 years).. The campus is very convenient from our Paris rentals in the 7th arrondissement, because it’s on Metro Line 8, so a direct line to the school.

Easy access via metro or bus.  From our Left Bank Paris apartments in the 7th, take the 42 bus and you’re there in 15 minutes. Direct on Line 8 if you take the metro.

L’Atelier 9
