Shopping in Paris

Paris is one of the finest cities in the world for shopping, and we do have some favorite streets and stores.  Yet, there are so many great books and articles about where to shop in Paris that my information could never be complete or up-to-the-minute.  Anyway, part of the fun is discovering all the new boutiques and trends!

Department Stores

For a fantastic shopping experience, shoppers should definitely make a visit to one of the large department stores in Paris. Two of the most famous stores, Printemps and Galeries Lafayette, stock a range of designer brand names and luxury fashions and can be found next door to each other in the 9th arrondissement.  If you're looking for more practical items such as homewares or furnishings, then take a trip to BHV in the 4th arrondissement.  For guest staying in our apartments in the 7th arrondissement, you can shop at Le Bon Marché, the only Left Bank, the only Left Bank department store.  It stocks a range of great clothing and has a fantastic food store.

High-End Fashion Districts

If you love designer fashion, a huge plus about renting one of our apartments in the 7th is that you're a stone's throw from the fabulous 'Triangle d'Or'.  Incorporating the area around Avenue Montaigne, Ave George V, and Rue Francois 1er, the Triangle d'Or is where you'll find the finest Haute Couture shops in the world including Dior, Chanel, Ferragamo, Dolce e Gabbana, Prada, Gucci, and many, many more.  Continue towards the Champs Elysees to shop at trendy Zara, Sephora and the Louis Vuitton flagship store.

Our Favorite Streets to Shop

Rue Tronchet is behind the Madeleine, leading up to Printemps and Galleries Lafayette.  Lots of neat stores.

There is a super handbag and luggage store on the right as you are nearing Blvd Haussmann, La Maroquinerie Parisienne, (01 47 42 83 40), 30 rue Tronchet.  Everything is 15-20% cheaper there; the selection is good and you’ll get your 20% détaxe off after spending €150.  Look for the display window and then walk up to the first floor.

All around the Bon Marché: (Place Sèvres Babylone—take the 87 bus and it goes right there).  Rue d’Assas and the streets leading deeper into the Latin Quarter are really fun.  Le Mouton à Cinq Pattes (The Sheep with Five Legs) has several stores on rue St. Placide—to the left as you face the Bon Marché and the second block on the left.  If you can stand it, the buy-out stores and designers’ stock overage stores—a lot of junk but some bargains.  More bargain stores, especially DPAM for children further down.

Walk down Blvd. Raspail to rue de Rennes—many interesting stores including Genevieve Lethieu for dishes, tablecloths and so on.  La Maison du Plastique for cool cheese trays, salad bowls out of clear plastic with  Provencal flowers inside, and so on.

Closer to home, check out Rue de Commerce—Commerce Street. Could any place be more aptly named? This little street in the 15th runs only from Boulevard de Grenelle to Rue des Entrepreneurs and yet is packed with every type of boutique, café, pâtisserie, pharmacie and chocolatier a shopper could ever want. In fact, I head straight to this little street and do all my shopping in one day—from beauty products to lingerie to my favorite French delicacies.

Outlet Malls

You can combine a day trip to the Champagne region or Disnelyand Paris with a trip to two of France's most popular outlet malls.  The McArtuhur Glen Outlet Shopping Mall in Troyes, Champagne and the La Vallée Village outlet mall near Euro Disney stock chic-brand name labels at heavily reduced prices.....more

Antique Stores

Drouts, a big auction gallery, is fascinating but it is very difficult to actually buy there—stuff is displayed for a short time and there are tons of people; cubbyholes of rooms belonging to different auctioneers—not easy.

A better option is to visit the The Puces - the antique Mecca of France.  It is excellent for French antiques, large and small........more
