Le Bon Marché
Le Bon Marché is an upscale department store located in Saint-Germain-des-Près - they have redone the store and it’s beautiful. The fashion, whether home or personal, is cutting edge. Also, there are lots of armchairs for weary partners to sit in and read. Importantly, there is a fabulous food store behind the main store and you will spend hours here exploring the many exotic and excellent foods — from French delicacies to exotic foods from all over. And, it’s the only major department store on the left bank.

BHV
BHV is next to the Hotel de Ville, the beautiful Town Hall. You can get to BHV via the 69 bus or Métro stop Hotel de Ville. The basement of BHV is famous for its hardware store, with every kind of French do-it-yourself item you would ever want — including bags of corks for making your wine and pigeon spikes to keep birds off railings. On the fifth floor they have really neat handles, knobs, and doorknobs and many of the items are reasonably priced. If you are thinking of remodeling anything, it is worth going there. Also, the store epitomizes the worst of French service so it’s worth going for the cultural experience. In most departments, for example, you have to go to one counter to have them count the nails, then wander around to find the cash register a mile away, wait in line to pay, then go all of the way back to the original counter for the nails.

La Samaritaine
An old favorite of many, it has been closed for renovations since 2005. Don't expect to visit until late 2011 - if all goes to plan!
