Description of our apartment with air conditioning!
It was a stroke of luck that we found the St. Julien apartment, a gorgeous rental apartment in Paris with the benefit of air conditioning. We bought it at the same time as our Volnay apartment and recount the story there. St. Julien is a gorgeous, sunny Parisian apartment rental with French doors that face the beautiful Champ du Mars Gardens. To the right, you see the Eiffel Tower through the trees.
This apartment rental in Paris is located in the center of this lively quartier on the Left Bank of Paris, a stone’s throw from the river and surrounded by shops, café’s and restaurants. It is a perfect apartment for two couples, a family or a group of friends who need separate sleeping space and two full bathrooms. It is great value compared to any hotel in Paris, and much, much more fun to stay at! An added bonus is the fact that the St. Julien Paris apartment rental is air conditioned.
This apartment was rented for years as the Paris base of an African Oil Company for their overseas executives. Unfortunately little maintenance was carried out and we bought it in a state of complete ruin. The old carpet hid enormous holes in the parquet floors which we discovered when Madelyn stepped into one. The windows and French doors leaked badly, staining the walls and floors; the paint was peeling, bathroom in a deplorable state, everything broken, etc. But the location in Paris was superb in this much sought-after quartier. The view to the Champ du Mars Gardens from the French doors and Eiffel Tower through the trees was exceptional. We completed the purchase on a cold January day and it took a record 7 months to restore and complete it. The result is, we think, spectacular.
St. Julien’s west-facing location means sunlight streams into the large living/dining room and the view of green trees and the Eiffel Tower twinkling to your right. Step into the apartment on the third floor (with elevator) to a long, well-lit hallway. Find storage closets on your right (good storage closets are a rarity in Paris) and an antique console table with oil painting on your left.
The toilet or WC is next on your left, decorated in beige marble. There is a sink, cupboard and plenty of hooks for extra ‘getting ready’ room. Next is the closet with separate washer and dryer by Miele and an open closet above for suitcases. We try to think of everything when it comes to storage and comfort, which means lots of closets, 80 gallon hot water tanks and excellent lighting.
On your right, enter the beautiful triple living/dining room with open plan kitchen.
The living room is fabulous; three sets of French doors open out to leafy green trees and a view of the Champ du Mars Gardens ahead. You can see the angels in stone which decorate the top floor of the Paris apartment building on the corner and the French flag flying on the corner below. To your right is the Eiffel Tower. During the spring and summer, you see it best at night, as it is covered by the leaves of the trees outside. Every night of the year, you cannot miss it’s magic light show as it twinkles for ten minutes on the hour. In the winter you see the whole Eiffel Tower through the bare branches. There are two decorative balconies which you can step out on to enjoy the view, but they are not wide enough for sitting or putting a table.
The living is decorated in warm yellows and French blues, creating a welcome and friendly atmosphere for your stay. Three pairs of French doors grace this long room. At the far end of the living room is a high quality sofa bed made for us in Italy which is over 6 feet long. It is perfect for sitting and for taking naps during the day. This room has sliding wooden doors of maple and sycamore that divide the room in two, creating a second bedroom at night. The sofa converts to two single beds by easily rolling out the trundle bed underneath. The seat of the long sofa slides out slightly to make a regular single bed as well. Italian design is remarkable; a spring allows you to pull the trundle to bed level and even a headboard pops up! There are two large armchairs in blue checked fabric face the sofa; two closets and a bookshelf are on your right for storage.
The first half of the living/dining room has a comfortable sofa bed which opens up to make a double bed, without having to remove a single cushion. It faces a beautiful hand-painted chest of drawers and large antique mirror, making the room feel more light and spacious. There is a flat screen plasma TV and dual standard DVD player so you can bring your favorite movies from home. Tune into CNN, CNBC and BBC and a variety of other channels. The CD player and radio are next to the tv so you can bring your favorite music to enjoy during your stay.
As with all of our apartments, we fit the highest quality double pane glass windows in our apartments, the same as used by luxury hotels. This means you can have a quiet night’s sleep while living in the heart of Paris.
Kitching/Dining area: The dining table sits in front of the first set of French doots, of sandblasted glass from Italy and expands to comfortably seat eight. A beautiful traditional chandelier contrasts with the modern look of the table.
The open plan kitchen features pale oak cabinets with pale granite worktops. There is every modern appliance you might wish for and extra storage in the closets behind the dining table. Find every modern appliance needed for cooking: full refrigerator/freezer, toaster, microwave, oven, induction burners, Nespresso espresso/cappuccino machine, drip coffee pot with timer, white porcelain dishes from E. Dehilerrin who supplies all the porcelain for fine restaurants in Paris, stainless steel pots and pans and an excellent selection of accessories, serving dishes, etc.
To the left of the hallway, step into the peaceful and the romantic master bedroom. Pale creams and beiges accentuate the beautiful carved headboard. There is a large window which overlooks the quiet inner courtyard. It is a compact room, but features every amenity and is extremely quiet and comfortable.
Next to the bed is an antique dresser where we have installed a flat screen plasma TV and dual standard DVD player so the children can relax in the bedroom while the adults relax in the living room; it’s great to vacation together, but also nice to have space to yourself. Lounge in bed and tune into CNN, CNBC and BBC and a variety of other channels. A built-in double closet is on the left just before the en suite bathroom. In keeping with providing every comfort, we have built shelves on either side of the bed with bedside lamps so you can read at night.
The first en suite bathroom features a large, glass-enclosed shower with fixed shower head, dual sinks, toilet, cupboard and plenty of hooks. We have tiled it with large pieces of Travertine marble and a line of copper mosaics at the top; the look is clean and modern.
The second bathroom is to the left of the bedroom, at the end of the hall. It is tiled in Botticcino marble with frieze, modern sink, full-sized bathtub with fixed and flexible shower heads and good storage.
An anecdote about the marble bathrooms in Volnay and St. Julien. We use quality materials in our apartments, our bill for marble tiles was high enough to make us research a source in Italy. Since Madelyn grew up in Italy, she scoured the quarries near Carrara and Pisa -- only to find we are too small to deal direct for our needs. But she located an excellent distributor in Empoli where the selection was enormous and prices were half those we paid in Paris, an astonishing difference when it is a day’s drive away. After much translation and emails regarding finish, colors, sizes, quality etc in rusty Italian, the first order arrived in April for Volnay and St. Julien. Philippe says Madelyn has no sense of volume and he was absolutely right when the marble was delivered. The trucker dropped off two entire tons of marble tiles on the sidewalk and left. Some of us had no idea that marble for three bathrooms and two toilets would weigh so much! The builder was furious because he wasn’t forewarned; he didn’t have enough men on site to carry it up by the stairs. Much apologizing later, it was finally delivered to the apartments and beautifully laid. From now on, we will book a special day to carry up the next delivery, especially because it will go to an apartment located on the 6th floor. It was worth it; the bathrooms are beautiful!
We leave several Paris guidebooks and other information on the neighborhood for you to peruse during your stay.
This is a non-smoking apartment and, sorry, but no pets are allowed.
We think this is one of the most romantic and special apartments in Paris and our returning guests love it. Please let me know if you have any other questions about our Paris apartment rental or if we can help in any way. We think your stay at www.parisperfect.com will bring you memories of a lifetime!

Please see our link on Paris Shopping for more details.

- 25 minutes to the department stores on Blvd. Haussman.
- 25 minutes walk to the Bon Marché department store.
- Open Food Markets: Our neighborhood is famous for its open food markets where you will find more than any other quartier in Paris. Merchants come from all over France with wines, fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, Brittany lobster, pâtés, breads, even five types of escargots!
- Rue Cler three blocks away, one of the best and most famous streets for food in Paris; open every day including Sunday morning but many shops are closed on Mondays. Our favorite cheese merchant is here; tell them which day you wish to eat it and they will hand pick the perfect selection!
- Pont de l'Alma is five-minutes walk and has the largest open market in Paris every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
- Ave du Saxe is open on Thursday and Saturdays and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Paris. Find many organic and deluxe food stands.
- Rue de Grenelle: open on Wednesdays and Sundays. Prices are excellent at this market located a few minutes walk in the 15th arrondissement.
- Rue du Commerce, near La Motte Piquet metro is 10 minutes walk and a lively French neighborhood: find excellent fresh foods, loads of clothing stores and perfume shops as well as the Monoprix department store (a French Target), with supermarket on the first floor -- good quality and great prices.
- You are surrounded by restaurants that local Parisians go to, cafés, bistros and shops.
- One block to the Eiffel Tower and Champ de Mars. The Champ de Mars Park is a rare bonus in Paris as there are few large parks in the center of the city. Walk, run, play in 1 of 3 playgrounds, basketball court, go to the puppet theater or just sit and enjoy. Nearby skating and bike rental are fun activities in the park, especially after strenuous site seeing.
- You are two blocks from the Ecole Militaire where Napoleon attended military school. This became Napoleon’s headquarters and housed his elite Emperor’s Troops in 1795. The buildings still show signs of the gunfire from the French Revolution in 1789 and the shelling when the Prussians declared war on France in 1870, to defeat Napoleon III. There are four statues on the façade representing: Might, Peace, Victory and France. The statue of Victory is of Louis XV, one of the only ones remaining as the rest were destroyed during the French Revolution.
- 10 minutes to the Invalides, a masterpiece of French Classical architecture built by Louis XIV. Napoleon’s tomb rests under the golden dome. Here is the Musee de l’Armee, housing one of the finest collection of arms, armour and uniforms in the world; it is especially renowned for its enormous collection of Medieval Armor.
- You are seven blocks to the incredible Rodin Museum; four blocks to Chirac’s new Museum of Ethnic Arts, four blocks to the Sewers of Paris tour (really interesting, especially for children and teenagers!).
- The apartment is near to the American Library, an institution in Paris where you can take out a daily membership and catch up on the news, read, and work and use their internet facilities.
- In January 2005, the Eiffel Tower converted the first floor into an ice skating rink 189 feet high above the rooftops of Paris; we hope it will continue every year.
