The region of Champagne is just 120 kilometers outside Paris and is renowned throughout the world for the production of the sparkling white wine bearing its name. With its vast plains and sweeping hills, this area is considered to be the jewel of France, and spending a day discovering the Route du Champagne is often held to be the highlight of a memorable vacation.
With this small group tour, you will be collected from your front door in style in a private minibus and offered fresh croissants and hot/cold beverages to start the day in comfort, while you travel towards the Champagne vineyards around Reims. Upon arrival at your first destination, you will be introduced to the main grape varieties and vines that are part and parcel of the unique Champagne soil conditions, and will enjoy an initial wine tasting in the company of the warm hospitality of the local wine grower.
After a traditional French lunch in a restaurant in Reims (included in the cost of your small group tour), you will proceed with a guided tour of the cathedral, complete with its awe-inspiring stained-glass windows. This Gothic masterpiece is the site where the kings of France were formerly crowned, and still draws the crowds now for Marc Chagall’s iconographic masterpieces, which were designed to great effect in 1974.
You will then travel on to visit one of Reims’ most famous vineyards (which include Taittinger, Pommery, Mumm and Lanson) for a step-by-step explanation of the wine-making procedure, “from grape to champagne” and from pressing through to corking and labeling. After enjoying a glass of champagne, you will then be escorted back through the vineyard-studded countryside to Paris and your apartment just an hour and a half away.
This excellent value small group tour includes round-trip transportation from your apartment and all entry fees and lunch.
