Scandalous Boudoirs and Courtesans

Travel back in time, and go off the beaten track to explore a new and scandalous side of Paris, with an intriguing and original walking tour that begins at the elegant Palais Royal hidden close to the Louvre. Starting at Place Colette, which was named after one of French literature’s best known female authors, you will hear risqué stories and anecdotes featuring a whole cast of charismatic and fascinating characters, as you walk through the beautiful Covered Passages and relive the atmosphere of Paris as it was back in the 19th Century.

Along this entertaining walk, you will be introduced to some of the raciest personalities to have peopled the city, from general Napoleon Bonaparte to artist Toulouse Lautrec, while making your way to the little-known 9th neighbourhood. Home to the famed Belle Époque painters who depicted life among the courtesans and cocottes who once lived there, you will learn all about the most notorious and luxurious brothels in South Pigalle, as well as some of the most infamous courtesans of the day.

The tour will finish in suitable style, at an exquisite former maison close decorated in decadent velvet, where you will sip a cocktail and soak up the early 20th Century atmosphere in the heart of the newly bohemian Montmartre district.
