Rollerblading Through the Streets of Paris

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

With spring arriving in Paris and the temperatures warming up, we’re always on the look out for fun and creative ways to enjoy being outdoors in Paris. Did you know you can rollerblade en masse every Sunday afternoon through the streets of Paris? Yes, you can join along with hundreds, often thousands, of skaters of all skill levels as they make their way through the historic center of Paris. What a great way to see the sights – and work off those morning croissants as well!

The group skate is sponsored by Rollers & Coquillages and is open to the public. The Prefecture of Police provides a full police escort to stop traffic, and yellow-shirted volunteers guide you along the route. The route changes weekly and is posted on their website with an English translation included here. A recent Sunday afternoon took the skaters past some of the top sights in the 7th arrondissement, including the beautiful golden dome at Les Invalides and the Eiffel Tower. What a fun way to see Paris!

It’s fun to watch, even if you don’t take part yourself. Check the route map, then plan your day sightseeing and shopping in Paris accordingly. You’ll have a great time waving and cheering the skaters on!

Before & After: Introducing the Enchanting Madiran Paris Apartment

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

We could fill a book (or two … or three!) with all the stories and experiences we’ve had remodeling our Paris vacation rentals. It certainly is an adventure from the rough beginning—when you have to squint your eyes and bring with you a healthy dose of imagination—all the way through to that WOW moment when you finally open the door and step into a beautiful new home in Paris. When the dust settles, and the memories of construction chaos begin to fade, there’s nothing we love more than before and after pictures!

Breakfast on the balcony of the enchanting new Madiran apartment!

It has been a joy for all of us to watch the transformation of the Madiran apartment into a beautiful 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom vacation home in a fabulous location in the 7th arrondissement. This story begins with a delightful family who first stayed with us at our at the Cognac apartment, and then returned to stay in the Chateau Latour. It is an honor for us every time guests return to stay with us, because it lets us know we’ve done our job well. This family enjoyed their Paris Perfect experiences so much that when they decided to buy an apartment in Paris they asked us to manage it while they were away. After months of searching, we were invited to view what would become the Madiran apartment for the first time. With many years of experience, we know what to overlook and how to spot potential – even in the most challenging apartments! Previously owned by an Egyptian/Asian couple with tastes that ran to hieroglyphs and tomb paintings mixed with the wife’s wedding dress pinned to the walls, the décor needed some serious work to say the least.

However, the potential shone through in the gorgeous balcony views of the Eiffel Tower, upper floor setting, original crown molding and mirrors and location in our favorite neighborhood in the 7th arrondissement. We gave our thumbs up and remodeling work began. Six months later … and the Madiran was reborn. Without further ado, let’s get to those before and after pictures!

Living Room – BEFORE – 1950s/60s/70s eclectic

The living room is the heart of a home, and one of the Madiran’s best features was its large double living and dining room with outstanding views of the Eiffel Tower. However, the 1950s/1960s/1970s  furniture and eclectic décor covered most of the room’s charms. Here’s a look before the remodeling where you can see some of those original details that caught our attention, such as the marble fireplace, mirrors and gorgeous crown molding.

Look at that mirror and crown molding - there's hope here!

Living Room

Are you ready for the first transformation? The view from the dining room toward the living room of the new Madiran is quite a different sight now. We found the original mirror for the living room, which matches the crown molding, hanging in one of the bedrooms. We had it refinished to hang once again above the original fireplace in the living room. The room is already bright and sunny thanks to the 5th floor location, but the green and purple furniture made the room feel dark and small. With a new silver sofa, which converts to a comfortable double bed at night, and beautiful accents, we think the room is a much cheerier setting for a holiday in Paris now!

Dining Room

The dining room of the Madiran was one of the apartment’s most striking transformations. The room had such promise for being a romantic setting for dining with views of the Eiffel Tower from the large French doors and out on the balcony. However, the busy décor failed to enhance the gorgeous setting.

Now we invite you to step into the newly remodeled and beautifully decorated dining room of the Madiran. It seems so completely different that it’s hard to even compare! The room now features a large oak table that seats up to 6, an elegant sideboard, antique plates hung on the wall and a gorgeous chandelier. Step outside on the small balcony where you’ll find a bistro table, perfect for morning coffee while taking in the stunning views of the Eiffel Tower.

Kitchen

When doing apartment renovations in Paris, we often end up completely moving kitchens and bathrooms in order to modernize and make the spaces as livable and comfortable for guests as possible. This often means adding more bathrooms or powder rooms, and can get quite complicated given the limitations of plumbing in historic Paris buildings. But where there’s a will there’s a way! In the Madiran, there was a lot of work to be done, and the kitchen ended up being moved completely. Where you see it in the before picture below you’ll now find the first bathroom in the Madiran. My how things change!

The original kitchen was where first bathroom is now!

The new kitchen in the Madiran was designed in an open plan with plenty of cupboard space and beautiful details. It’s located conveniently near the dining room and is now a light and pleasant space to prepare meals for family and friends. What a difference!

Hallway

A light and sunny space changes the way you live in a home, and we try to bring in as much as possible in our Paris vacation rentals. When we first saw the dark hallway leading to the bedrooms and bathrooms in the Madiran, we knew we had to do something. It was dark and gloomy, and the wall of books made us feel cramped walking down the hallway.

Long hallway with dark wood ceilings and jammed with books

The after shot for the hallway really tells the story of how much you can transform a space! The dark ceiling was removed and replaced with excellent lighting. The bookshelves were removed and replaced with antique paintings fitted with their own lights above. The new bathroom on the left with toilet, shower and sink was added where the kitchen once was before the renovations.

Bathrooms

The before pictures of the bathrooms in the Madiran pretty much speak for themselves. They needed some serious help to bring them up to modern tastes!

Bathroom needed updating ... to say the least!

We love the final results of the two beautiful bathrooms after the renovation of the Madiran. The artistic touches, antique mirrors, heated towel racks and excellent lighting has transformed the bathrooms into pleasant rooms to start your day in Paris. Bedrooms

Little surprise that the bedrooms at the Madiran needed some love and attention as well. In the main bedroom there was a gorgeous mirror with a design that matched the crown molding in the living room. That’s the one you spotted earlier hanging in its new location above the original fireplace. While we know everyone has their own decorating tastes, we found the wedding dress pinned to the wall and the exercise equipment unusual touches in the bedroom.

Both of the bedrooms at the Madiran have been transformed into two beautiful and comfortable rooms. It’s a pleasure to turn in at night when you’re surrounded by such a romantic and luxurious setting. The rooms have tons of storage, luxurious linens and have been decorated with unique little touches that create a cozy feel. Don’t you want to just move right in?

It’s All In the Details …

Naturally, it’s not all about those fun choices of new decorations, color and furniture when it comes to renovating an apartment in Paris. There are problems like peeling paint, damaged walls and oh so many other fun things to attend to at the same time. But to turn an apartment into a welcoming home, it’s all in the details!

After all the hard work, we think the beautiful original details of the Madiran apartment really shine through! The crown molding in the living room and dining room is stunning, the floors have been refinished beautifully and the apartment decorated with a romantic and artistic touch. We know guests are going to love staying in this welcoming and comfortable new Paris vacation rental!

Fall in Love with Paris at the Madiran!

There’s one thing that didn’t need any retouching during the renovation – the picture perfect views of the Eiffel Tower from the romantic balcony at the Madiran!  At night it offers a spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower, especially magical when thousands of twinkling lights dance across it every hour on the hour. The Madiran is now available for your next holiday in Paris, and we invite you to view more after photos of the Madiran by clicking here.

Savoring the Sweet Life in Paris – Interview with David Lebovitz

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

At Paris Perfect it’s no secret that we adore French pastries and desserts. Discovering new pâtisseries, trying different desserts or simply enjoying our family favorites is one of those little joys we treasure in life. Above all, we love how the search for the perfect bakery or pastry is a lifelong art in Paris.

We know we’re not alone in our love of the Parisian lifestyle and approach to desserts, and for years we’ve been enthusiastically following David Lebovitz, an American Pastry chef and author, who has lived in Paris since 2004. We love his sense of humor, hilarious storytelling, passion for French desserts and the excellent recipes he shares in his cookbooks and on his award-winning blog.

Although in the midst of a complicated apartment remodeling project in Paris (something we know a lot about at Paris Perfect!), David was kind enough to take some time out to answer a few of the questions we’ve been dying to ask about the Parisian pastry scene, his favorite open-air markets and the charms and challenges of life in Paris.

Paris Perfect: What has changed the most about pastries and pâtisseries since you moved to Paris in 2004?

David Lebovitz: I think they’ve gotten better and better. When pastry chefs, like Pierre Hermé and Fabrice Le Bourdat, began getting the recognition that was formerly reserved for regular chefs, people started taking more notice of pastries, so the quality and diversity have really been dialed up. And people in Paris aren’t afraid of eating cakes and tarts, so bakeries are still a vibrant part of life in Paris.

What are the Paris food markets you couldn’t live without?

All of them are different, but I think the Marché d’Aligre is the most interesting and diverse market in Paris [Métro Ledru-Rollin, 12th arrondissement]. There are all sorts of things there, from great cheeses, to exotic produce. The covered market is wonderful to explore, and it’s open in the afternoons (when other markets are closed) and if you get there early enough in the morning, the flea market is fun to poke around in. I’ve scored a few times rifling through the boxes of cookware.

I also like the Batignolles market on Saturday morning since it’s all local produce [Métro Rome, Place de Clichy, 17th arrondissement]. The downside is that it takes three different métros for me to go there, which is a long way to go round-trip, especially when you’re hauling produce.

You include a wealth of insider and humorous tips for visitors to Paris in your book The Sweet Life in Paris, Delicious Adventures in the World’s Most Glorious and Perplexing City. What are the 3 most important tips you would offer a visitor?

1) Never try to pay a cashier for anything with a large bill, because even if they have a drawerful of change, they will make you rifle through every pocket and cranny in your wallet to make absolutely certain that you don’t have exact change.

2) Always greet people with, “Bonjour madame” or “Bonjour monsieur” no matter where you encounter them, from walking into shops, to entering elevators and doctor’s waiting rooms where other people are present. And always say “Merci” as you depart, even if the person hasn’t been particularly helpful. (Which seems funny, but the French are really good at being able to do a put-down just by changing the inflection in their voice, so “Merci, monsieur” could be seen as “Thank you, sir” or “Thanks for nothing, sir” – by just altering the tenor slightly.)

3) Don’t let Charles De Gaulle airport cloud your vision of Paris. And bring your own food if you go. It astounds me that they don’t have any decent dining options when arriving or leaving what is supposed to be one of the great gastronomic capitals of the world.

When you’re traveling, what do you miss the most about Paris?

The bread.

Paris Perfect Interview with David Lebovitz

What ingredients do you miss from America that you can’t easily find in France?

Aluminum foil from the States, which French cooks ask me to bring them back from trips. If you want to make a French woman happy, skip the perfume and chocolates, and give her a tight roll of heavy-duty Reynolds Wrap.

You’ve described Paris as a great muse, because it has so many stories. What are some of the spots in Paris that speak to you most as a writer?

It’s the irregularities of life here that are fodder for stories. Like cashiers telling you they have no change, when they’re sitting in front of a drawerful of bill and coins, when a bureaucrat tells you it’s not their job to tell you what forms they need (that you need to figure that out yourself), and that the French are scrupulous about l’hygiene, yet tolerate an unusual amount of doggie messes on the street.

We have those things in American culture as well – especially they hygiene part, as everyone in America seems to be toting little bottles of sanitizer, but we tolerate other shoppers touching all our fruits and vegetables before we buy them, and we buy cars based the cup holders, not on reliability or price.

What is the sweetest part of life in Paris for you?

I like how bakeries and chocolate shops are integrated into life in Paris. They’re not “special occasion” places, but are where Parisians shop for their daily food. And while everyone is seemingly on le régime (diet), they will always make an exception is something chocolate is passed their way.
